Deer stalking in Inverness-shire

Deer stalking in Inverness-shire

Deer stalking in Scotland is steeped in history and tradition and is a real bucket-list experience for most hunters.

About deer stalking in inverness-shire

Scotland is home to four species of deer: red, roe fallow and sika. Each of these species has a different season for males and females. Red deer are, however, the iconic species, with the big stags - sometimes called the ‘monarch of the glen’ - drawing people from all over the world. Most commonly found in the wild landscape of the Highlands, stalking red deer over the heather-clad hills and glens is an experience like no other, requiring patience, a steady nerve and extensive fieldcraft of the ghillies and stalkers that many of the providers on GunsOnPegs can offer.

Isle of Rum

Inverness-shire, United Kingdom

We are delighted to be able to offer Red Stag stalking on the Isle of Rum for the 2017 season. We have been running the pheasant and partridge shooting on the Isle of Muck (next door to Rum) for the past 8 years and this year we have made an agreement with the landowners of Rum to take the stags for the next 2 season.  Come and join our stalkers & ghillies for a memorable and unique experience. The Isle of Rum lies some 20 miles off the UK mainland and is accessed by the ports of Mallaig and Arisaig. Both ports are easier to get to that you think. They are around a 40-mile journey west of Fort William and people heading to the Hebrides can also take full advantage of the fabulous sleeper train that runs from London. Then there is a breathtakingly beautiful 2-hour journey by boat, passing down the Sleat peninsula on Skye and past the Isle of Eigg. The ferry docks on Rum in the deep and rugged harbour of Kinloch, over shadowed by Kinloch Castle and the mountains around the bay.  Rum is approximately 25,000 acres and one of the most famous open hill deer forests in Scotland. The red deer thrive in our relatively mild climate and graze on the lush pasture which has made the Rum deer herd famous for its size of Stags, both in body mass and antler growth. Over the 25,000 acres, there is a bit of hill to suit every ability and fitness. Deer extraction is mainly done by the highland ponies (Garrons) but we also use Argo's and a bit of dragging in some places. The views are perhaps the biggest distraction when out stalking. It is hard for even the most serious sportsman to concentrate on their stag, when they are surrounded by the most wonderful scenery anywhere in the world. From Rum, you can see the Isles of Skye, Muck, Eigg, Canna, Soay, Mull, Coll, Tiree and even out to the outer isles of the Uists, Barra and Benbecula, not to mention the hills and mountains of the main land.  We can have up to 3 stalkers on the hill with 3 guests shooting on any one day. Guests may of course bring their own rifles, or we can provide estate rifles and we would encourage those that have never tried this form of sport to give it a go.  Our stalker will by out with our guests at all times and will talk you through the day and how they see it unfolding. They also have a vast knowledge of the island and its history, and can point out some of the landmarks, both natural and manmade, as you travel around the hill.  Guest will be met by our Stalkers at the pier and taken to their accommodation.  We use the Ivy Cottage B&B at the head of the harbour, which has very comfortable accommodation, delicious food and can sleep up to 3 people. For larger groups, it is possible to accommodate them in the Bunkhouse. This recently opened building can sleep up to 20 guests, and we can organize catering (breakfast, piece (packed lunch) and evening meal), leaving guest free to fully enjoy their stay.  For guests looking for 1 or 2 stags we would recommend a 2 night stay to allow guest a full day out on the hill. As well as stalking, the island also boasts a number of the most fabulous hills lochs, with stunning backdrops, where guests can pit their angling skills against wily brown trout. There is also a river that runs up through Kinloch where, at high tide, you can cast for sea trout. Our enthusiastic and highly motivated staff will guide you and inform you about the history of Rum, throughout your stay, starting the moment you step off the boat. For a truly unique island experience, in a landscape unrivalled anywhere in the highlands, contact us and we can tailor a package that is right for you and your friends. We look forward to meeting you.
