Deer stalking in Argyll & Bute

Deer stalking in Argyll & Bute

Deer stalking in Scotland is steeped in history and tradition and is a real bucket-list experience for most hunters.

About deer stalking in argyll & bute

Scotland is home to four species of deer: red, roe fallow and sika. Each of these species has a different season for males and females. Red deer are, however, the iconic species, with the big stags - sometimes called the ‘monarch of the glen’ - drawing people from all over the world. Most commonly found in the wild landscape of the Highlands, stalking red deer over the heather-clad hills and glens is an experience like no other, requiring patience, a steady nerve and extensive fieldcraft of the ghillies and stalkers that many of the providers on GunsOnPegs can offer.

Sannox Estate

Argyll & Bute, United Kingdom

Deer stalking at its best and more accessible than most. Only 45 minutes from Glasgow and one hour by ferry and you can be "on the hill" in minutes, stalking amid a National Scenic Area. The carefully managed herd allows a cull of approx. 55 stags and 120 hinds on a sustainable basis, where the oldest and weakest of the herd are taken as first choice and, only if numbers permit, a small control cull of younger animals may be taken. There may, however, be an opportunity to shoot an older trophy stag but this should be requested in advance and will be actioned only at the stalker's discretion. Accompanied by a skilled and experienced stalker, aided by an ATV and a ghillie, as necessary, we aim to make the day out and, indeed, the whole experience as enjoyable as possible, starting with a short familiarisation session on the range through to finishing back at the larder. Young enthusiasts are particularly welcome and we recommend some more-affordable hind stalking to kindle an interest in this fantastic sport, from late October to the end of January.
