Deer stalking at its best and more accessible than most. Only 45 minutes from Glasgow and one hour by ferry and you can be "on the hill" in minutes, stalking amid a National Scenic Area.
The carefully managed herd allows a cull of approx. 55 stags and 120 hinds on a sustainable basis, where the oldest and weakest of the herd are taken as first choice and, only if numbers permit, a small control cull of younger animals may be taken. There may, however, be an opportunity to shoot an older trophy stag but this should be requested in advance and will be actioned only at the stalker's discretion.
Accompanied by a skilled and experienced stalker, aided by an ATV and a ghillie, as necessary, we aim to make the day out and, indeed, the whole experience as enjoyable as possible, starting with a short familiarisation session on the range through to finishing back at the larder.
Young enthusiasts are particularly welcome and we recommend some more-affordable hind stalking to kindle an interest in this fantastic sport, from late October to the end of January.
Topography
The deer range runs from sea level to 2866 ft. There is a sort of plateau at about 600 - 800 ft and most of the stalking takes place at this sort of altitude. Early season stags provide the glorious opportunity to stalk amid the high peaks surrounded by stunning views in all directions.
About the hosts
Charles Fforde, proprietor and manager of Sannox Estate stalked his first-time at the age of 10 and has not lost his interest in managing the herd during the fifty years since. The quality of the deer after so long a period of careful selection speaks for itself and his experience of what a visiting sportsman might need or want will, hopefully, make for a great and memorable day on the scenic Arran hills.
