Summerdown farm has been owned by our family for four generations, and we have been running a shoot on the farm for all that time. The shoot is very much a family affair, creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Summerdown is well located between Marlborough and Andover on the edge of Salisbury plain in Wiltshire. It has easy access from the M4 junctions 14 and 15, Swindon and Hungerford. Or from the M3 leading to the A303 Andover and Tidworth.

We provide fast exciting sport of a high quality in beautiful surroundings. The shoot is situated on the Wiltshire downs; this wild and unique environment with its open spaces, valleys and banks is one of the most natural partridge habitats in Britain. The terrain has been harnessed to show our French partridge in a similar way to the English partridge of earlier days.

Partridge days are available from mid-September through October, with mixed pheasant and partridge shooting from November onwards. We do days of varying bag sizes from 150 to 400 birds, and can tailor a day to suit your requirements.

We offer days for 6 to 10 guns, but enquiries from smaller parties or single guns are very welcome. Loaders and helper / minders can be arranged for those that want them.

We have a gun bus to transport teams of guns to and around the shoot, but guns can use their own 4WD's if they want to.

Dogs are most welcome, as are any non-shooting guests.

Hospitality

For all our shoot days we meet at 9 to 9.15 am at the Shears Inn, a gastro village pub in Collingbourne Ducis, the neighboring village. Becks and her team at The Shears, provides all our shoot catering requirements to a very high standard.

Teams are most welcome to meet earlier for breakfast before the day. The Shears also has five en-suit rooms available for those that might want to stay. Private dinner can be arranged individually or for whole teams.

Topography

Summerdown is situated on the Wiltshire downs, in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the edge of Salisbury plain. With broad deep valleys, steep banks and open vistas it is perfect terrain for partridges and pheasants.

Conservation Efforts

Over the past 40 years our family have planted thousands of trees on Summerdown, many of which have now grown into well established woods, tree belts and hedgerows. Not only creating great habitat and natural corridors for our game birds but also for the abundance of other wildlife that we have at Summerdown. We have been running a Countryside Stewardship scheme on the farm for the last 20 years, incorporating flower meadows, nesting plots, wild bird seed and nectar plots into both our farming and shooting systems. Which has helped to enhance the quantity and diversity of the natural flora and fauna on Summerdown.

About the hosts

Our days are hosted by Kenny May and his team. Ken is also the shoot manager and has a wealth of experience running and hosting shoot days, he has been managing Summerdown for the past 25 years. But he also grew up helping on the farm and shoot.

A superb, well run shoot with a warm and friendly family atmosphere. With its hilly, undulating topography it shows many really fabulous birds over a large number of drives. Well worth a visit, it will not disappoint.

This is my second season of shooting at Summerdown and after many years of shooting it is right up there as one of my most favourite. You are looked after impeccably and the birds are fantastic. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

We shot for the second year at Summerdown farm and cannot recommend it highly enough. The general feeling was its the best shoot on our roving syndicate's calendar. The birds are well presented with a mix of partridge and pheasant presented over roving farmland, however with careful and skillful planning the birds really do fly well. This is one of the friendliest shoots we’ve been to and the hospitality and elevenses are second to none.
