The Highfield Estate, renowned for its formal shoot over the past 30 years, spans 1,000 acres across the Wharfe Valley, opposite the famous Ilkley Moor.

It features undulating woodland, valleys and grazing land, with game crops such as mustard, stubble turnip, and kale.

The land varies from the lowland river levels of the river wharfe cutting through the the spa town of Ilkley to the moorlands and reservoirs above the town at 850ft above sea level

The estate is fully keepered by Colin who has managed the conservation of highfied for the past 24 years.

Colin is supported by his son "Daniel"and daughter-in-law "Victoria" who live on the estate and a dedicated team with their dogs, who are essential for the shoot’s operations.

Topography

Formed from the former Parklands of the Denton Park estate, Highfield is a mixture of grazed grasslands and mature woodlands with valleys formed from water running from the moorlands at the top of the estate down into the river basin at the the bottom. Carefully placed game crops and ponds allows for a mixture of shooting whilst out in the field to the fast paced pegs deep in the valleys formed by the becks sending water down into the river wharfe. The Land is hilly and rugged so we expect a level of fitness from our Guns to navigate the terrain however the teams are always on hand to assist you to your peg.

Good boots and a bit of stamina are part of the day as we are not the type of shoot where you will be escorted to the Peg in your best brogue's.

Conservation Efforts

Highfield, Like our neighbours at Denton Park take conservation seriously and that can been seen the second you arrive in the area. Look up and you will be hard pressed not to see multiple birds of prey and in the cold misty winter mornings its not uncommon to see 20+ red kits all sat in the same tree.

Curlew, and other red listed ground nesting birds are also in abundance on the estate with a balanced pest control policy in place and the range of landscape from parkland & woodlands at the bottom of the estate through to more wetland environments and rough grazing moving up to the moorland edge and reservoir bordering the higher end of our reach.

About the hosts

Colin, The Head Keeper has been part of the Highfield Estate for the past 24 years and is support by his son Daniel and Daniels wife Victoria who has recently taken over from the former shoot captain of the same name.

We provide a formal yet relaxed atmosphere where teams can interact with the beating line and enjoy the fun of a day while still providing the level of service you would expect from a day at highfield.

We had a great day rough shooting, 5 guns, 3 of us brought spaniels. Fantastic varied terrain for rough shooting including woodlands, gorse banks, grazing fields, and reed beds. Ended up with a brilliant mixed bag that included pheasants, woodcock, snipe, squirrels, and partridge. Daniel greeted us with bacon butties (from his own pigs) and then hosted our day throughout. We also had some fantastic pies and a bottle of port for lunch. I’d absolutely recommend this place to any team looking for a day rough shooting, especially if they want to work their own dogs. We’ll be back next season I very much hope. Thank you!

This is a shoot I have followed and tried to access over the past 4 years , due to its positive reviews and location , being at the foothills of Ilkley moor . Colin the head keeper , is a true Yorkshire gentleman who in extreme Storm Amy conditions did his utmost to produce quality birds , it was the first day of there season , and the challenge was a difficult one, but they pulled off a great day , the fellow guns , shared a mutual understanding of selecting the sporting birds , all in all a great day , friendly and rewarding day in the field , If they can do that in the eye of the storm , the standard days will be excellent , well-done Highfield team.

Sincerest thanks to Victoria, Colin, Dan and all the other "supporting staff" for making the shoot on Saturday so enjoyable, all four of us just had one great day from start to finish - Absolutely brilliant. Really looking forward to visiting Highfield again in the not too distant future. Its great to hear of the future growth plans for the shoot which will just increase the quality of the shoot.

A very friendly and well organised shoot. Victoria, Daniel and Colin all did a great job to make me feel welcome and there was a good variety of well run drives combined with a friendly group of fellow guns. A really great day and I look forward to going back in January.

Very warm welcome by Victoria. Unfortunately Daniel wasn’t around. Colin the gamekeeper was also very welcoming and knowledgable Victoria was extremely helpful at placing us at our pegs and advising where the birds would be along with Jake The food was all locally sourced and freshly prepared for the day’s shooting Our whole family had a great days shooting and all our dogs had plenty to do amid beautiful Yorkshire countryside Also a brilliant weekend with great food at The Chevin Inn and a good nights sleep at Chevin End B&B Hoping to go again in the future helped us have a great shooting experience
