South Lodge Estate Shoot is a traditional driven game shoot. The estate is an hour and twenty minutes from London located in the heart of West Sussex. The estate overlooks the south downs with beautiful open fields and ancient English Woodland, and the shoot has been running for decades with the current keeper taking over from his father in the 90s.

The shoot has now been going since the 1980's, with an excellent keeper, who stepped up to Head Keeper in 1997, taking over from his father.

The estate shoots a mixture of partridge and mostly pheasant throughout the season with days from 150 – 225 birds, typically with 8 or 9 guns.

We have two whole additional days to sell in December this year (14th and 23rd) and are open to enquiries for half or full days for the 2024 season. 150 - 200 birds for the 14th and 150 birds for the 23rd. Costs available on request.

Days itinerary: The day starts at Aglands Barn FARM, RH138AN, with a cup of coffee and a briefing at 9.15 sharp, moving off at 9.30. Guns drive around in their own cars and we typically shoot 5 drives across the day, stopping for elevenses after the first two. A delicious hot lunch is served in our shoot barn and a well-deserved cup of tea and sandwich after the last drive.

Later in the season when it gets dark earlier, the keeper may decide to shoot through, but we try to let the guns know beforehand that this may happen.

Hospitality

Coffee available in a Barn on arrival at the Farm. Basic sloe gin and snacks are provided after the first two drives, however we encourage guns to bring their own tipple. Pre-lunch drinks and wine and port served at lunch at the shoot barn Tea and sandwiches in Barn when the Head Keeper joins to make final report on the day. Two oven-ready birds provided per gun after tea

Topography

Typical high weald ground with woodland and open fields. Some high banks. Game crops planted for extra cover. Pegs in both woodland and fields.

Conservation Efforts

We pride ourselves on looking after our ancient English Woodlands and regard the shoot as a key part of managing and being able to reinvest in the woods. Other conservation schemes include a move away from intensive arable cropping to meadowlands.

About the hosts
