A Gumbley Bury St Austens Shoot

Shoot · West Sussex · 81 followers

Pheasant

The shoot has been successfully run since the late 1960's . Based on Surrey /Sussex border, we shoot over woods and mostly arable farmland, although one of our landlords does occasionally have sheep grazing. Days are sold on the basis of hopefully a 150 bird bag and, although we do not charge overages, we reserve the right to halt shooting at 160 if gunnery proves to be high quality. Quarry is pheasant, pigeon, any flying undesirable vermin and woodcock (after Christmas). Definitely no ground game and fibre wad cartridges only.

Hospitality

Tea/coffee and bacon rolls on arrival, and after 3rd drive, back to the lakeside lodge for soup, sausages, pasties and cake. A 16.30 late lunch (not included in the price) can be arranged at our local pub by prior arrangement. Most guns seem to prefer to "shoot through" (as do the beaters) particularly if weather is inclement, but the break after the 3rd drive can be changed to an earlier pub lunch if required.

Topography

Although our ground is on clay (which can be a bit sucky at times), all stands are fairly easy access by 4x4 vehicles then on foot, but if some guns find it tough going, they can be taken to their pegs by ATV ("Mule"). No high banks or deep valleys.

About the hosts

The ground we shoot over is owned by Mr. C.P.Wheeler, and his neighbours Mr. Paul Williams and Mr. Edmund O'Reily-Hyland - none of whom take an active part in the shoot. Your host/gamekeeper is Adrian Gumbley and his wife (Janice) and son (Jeremy) run the beating line. A really friendly, approachable family team.
