Situated between Ipswich and Felixstowe, alongside the River Deben, the Kirton Estate is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The 3000 acre arable estate has good access to the A12/A14 and is within easy access of central London by train. The Shoot has been established for many years and has a reputaion for its excellent sport and good hospitality in a friendly relaxed atmosphere.

An anticipated day's shooting would be for up to 8 guns, with a mixed bag of 200 - 250 birds (mainly pheasants and partridges). Shots to bag ratio 3:1.

The Estate has 60 acres of game cover and 150 acres of woodland. There are 20 drives spread over the 3000 acres and these are positioned to make the most of the undulating topography. The drives to be shot are chosen on the day of the Shoot to take in account, amongst other things, how the birds are holding and the prevailing weather conditions on the day.

Coffee on arrival, hot lunch and afternoon tea are served in the dedicated Shoot Lodge and are included in the costs.

A typical day's shooting would be

  • 09.00:        Arrival (Coffee served)

  • 09.30:        Move off - 4/5 Drives in the Morning

  • 11.00:        Break - Soup and Sloe Gin

  • 13.00:        Hot Lunch (Drinks included)

  • 14.15:        Move off - 1/2 Drives after Lunch

  • 16.00:        Tea and Cake

  • 17.00:        Departure

(If it is very wet there is an option to shoot through and have lunch at approx. 2.15 pm.)

They generally do not shoot very often in the year and there are always a good number of Partridges and a good few Pheasants considering it is more focussed on the Partridge side of things. The drives are well thought out and allow for adjustment to suit days when the wind is not coming from the South West. The drives use gentle undulations to present consistently good Partridges and reasonable Pheasants. There is the last drive of the day of course that is a tremendous drive the birds come out of cover which is perhaps 15 metres above the guns and then fly across the grass field in which the guns as located these are birds have climbed are then flying flat or are still climbing as they cross the guns they are also rarely going straight as they have several points to which they are flying. The whole line gets shooting the two end guns perhaps a bit less so. It is a proper ending to a fabulous day. The shoot room and the lunch and tea are all perfect for the job and when you arrive there is coffee to greet you. If you get the chance don't miss a lovely day.

I shot here as a guest in November 2014,I highly recommned the shoot. the day was a light to medium wind and mixture of sun and overcast. The partridge were more than plentiful, and due to the terrain they flew high. If you like fast, busy partridge drives this estate wont dissapoint. The host is very engaging and the hospitality top quality. I would warn that you should only take experienced shots, here with instructions to be selective, the quality of the birds is very good but you could easily exceed your target bag if your guns can shoot straight. I took the view after the first drive that if in doubt, wait and an even better bird would present itself. Our team shot 249 for 448 and I'd put this estate above other very well known estates in East Anglia.
