“Must rate as one of the best shoots in East Anglia” Says Will Garfit one of the UK’s top shots, renowned author, columnist for the Shooting Gazette, artist and former member of the judging panel for the Purdy Awards.

Harkstead offers driven bird shooting, 2/3rds partridge, 1/3rd pheasant and typically shooting 250-275 bird days. Guns may choose to buy individual days or join a syndicate for 3 or 6 days during the season. Full let days are available for 8 or 9 guns with a bag as required. Travelling syndicates are welcome with a full or part team.

The Harkstead Hall Estate, is a hidden gem of a shoot located on the Shotley peninsular, South Suffolk, which offers some of the finest partridge shooting in the region. Harkstead is barely 20 minutes from Ipswich with good road and rail links. Ten minutes from Junction 56 of the A14 and only 75 minutes from the M25, Harkstead Hall Estate is in easy reach of London and the Home Counties. We are happy to advise on numerous hotels and accommodation options within easy reach.

If you would like more information, or to have a look around the shoot, please let us know and we can update you on availability. The dedicated team at the Estate, headed by Daniel Hewes, aim to provide a relaxed and enjoyable day’s shooting. We look forward to welcoming you on a day.

Will Garfit on shooting at Harkstead:

“The Harkstead Shoot must rate as one of the best shoots in East Anglia. The rolling landscape was very well laid out with a series of mixed species woods in the 1950s. These are now in their prime as splendid pheasant coverts. In addition, there are maize game crops which produce excellent partridge drives where the birds spread well over all the guns.

The quality of the birds present excellent sport based on a great variety of shots at birds of varying heights, speeds and angles which cater for all calibre of shots, to suit and challenge all. There is no shortage of birds at any stage of the season and nimble fast loading is exciting and usually required.

The keepering is of top quality both in the management of good healthy birds and skilful driving, by a cheerful team of beaters, of both whizzing partridges and sporting pheasants.

The hospitality is with a greeting of bacon and egg baps, mid-morning refreshments and excellent two course hot lunch, with wine in the spacious shoot room. A log fire and a cup of tea at the end, makes a day with friends complete.

I always have a warm glow reliving the sport and company of any day at Harkstead”.

Hospitality

We normally start the day with tea, coffee with egg and bacon rolls. Elevenses are served in the field after the second drive, usually comprising of soup, savouries, English sparkling wine and sloe gin. After the 4th drive you return to the shoot lodge for pre-lunch drinks and a two course sit down lunch with wine. We finish the day following the afternoon drives at the shoot lodge with tea, bag count and farewells.

Birds

A mixture of birds, testing the more experienced shot along with catering for beginners.

Topography

The shoot is set over 1,000 acres comprising of mixed terrain, valleys and flat arable land giving a variety of different shooting challenges; established ancient woods and mixed cover ensures a constant supply of birds over the guns. The choice of drives is designed to provide quality shooting for experienced guns and novices. Drives are accessed with 4x4 vehicles via a mix of public lanes and private tracks through the Estate’s impressive scenery.

Conservation Efforts

The shoot is making efforts to increase its level of sustainability, making sure that, where possible, all game goes into the food chain, ideally locally. Guests on shoot days will often have lunch from the estates game and venison in delicious, home-cooked meals.

In contrast to many other shoots, eggs are hatched from our own laying stock and almost all our birds are reared at Harkstead helping to maintain the quality of sport.

About the hosts

The Estate is privately owned and our head keeper, Daniel Hewes, together with a team of regular beaters and pickers up look forward to welcoming the members of the Harkstead Sporting Club and providing a memorable day’s shooting in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

Being on a peninsula the days are frequently windy improving the quality of the birds. Easy access off the A12/A14. The issue is not getting the bag but ensuring that you get the drives by picking only the best birds on each. The light Suffolk soil ensures you do not carry the land with you.
