The ‘Boulge Hall shoot’ was added to our club shoot last season after a few years of being neglected. The shoot covers approx. 900 acres with 140 acres of mature woods split into many small coppices, these together with 9 cover crops, a large are of grassed parkland at the centre of the shoot. Together with arable farmed land on the outsides. There are a variety of mixed bird drives that allows the day to be varied depending on weather conditions and then as the season progresses woodcock are often seen on many of the drives. The aim is to produce 150 head, being a syndicate on good flying days we may go over and do less on days which may be less pleasant.
Hospitality
Bacon rolls on arrival with tea and coffee stops for drinks on the run weather permitting, again weather permitting stop at mid day ish for a buffet lunch and a catch up with the team of beaters and picker ups a catch up at the end of day with drinks or tea coffee. The shoot prides its self as a relaxed shoot with the emphasis on enjoying a day’s shooting and being out in beautiful countryside.
Conservation Efforts
A large part of the shoot which is park land has been turned from arable to grass within the wildlife steward ship scheme together with many wildbird crops and pollen and nectar mixtures, following on from the successful introduction of grey partridge on our other shoot we have released parent reared birds to help establish a wild stock, this will continue with a charitable fining system in place for shooting one, pleased to say wild broods seen this year. We are also working towards an area for turtle dove attraction with the hope of nesting next season. with the amount of mature woodland comes deer these are managed and the woods have a thinning program to help with the ash die back.
About the hosts
Chris runs this shoot with his direct family supporting the club also together with a loyal core team (several with 25 year association)that deliver a fun day. Although only the 2nd season at Boulge Chris has run shoots for over 30 years and stocks them from his small game farm usings closed breeding flocks all shot game is processed
