Birds
Rock pigeon shooting is often considered Africa’s equivalent of Scotland's grouse shooting, offering high-volume, action-packed hunts in a scenic rural setting. It is a popular and challenging form of wing shooting that appeals to many international guns. It is a fast, agile, and alert bird, often regarded as one of the most challenging game birds to shoot in flight. Guns may go through hundreds of shells in a day, given the high volume of birds and the challenge of hitting them. Best Time: late February to early June, coinciding with the grain harvesting season, when pigeons gather in large flocks to feed on milo, maize, and sunflower fields. Flightline Shooting: Hunters are typically positioned along pigeon flight paths, often near feeding grounds or roosting sites.
Topography
The terrain is generally flat to gently undulating, at an elevation of about 1,400 to 1,500 meters above sea level. The terrain includes low, rolling hills and expansive open plains.
The area is characterized by grassland vegetation, typical of the Highveld biome. The land is primarily used for agriculture, cattle grazing, and rural residential settlements, with large open spaces between properties.
The majority of our shooting takes place in the vast sunflower fields found in the area, which attracts thousands of Rock Pigeon and a variety of Dove species into the area.
Conservation Efforts
Pigeons and doves are considered agricultural pests as they consume and squander a vast percentage of the annual sunflower crop. The damage millions of pigeons cause annually is quantified in eight-digit figures, something unimaginable to the uninformed public. By adding value in terms of concession fees paid to landowners and curbing the population explosion lessens some of the impact these birds have on sunflower yields. Excess shot birds are a protein source to farm labourers, but more importantly, to the impoverished local communities around the areas we hunt. We often employ people from these communities to assist on our shoots. For them sharing in the spoils of the day is sometimes the only fresh protein their families will receive and is looked upon as a god sent.
