MacTavish Safaris offers you personal hunting and shooting experiences in wild, wide open spaces for African species the diversity of which is extraordinary. By coming to us you’ll either be in the hands of professional outfitters, or you might find yourself with locals spending time and hunting in places that most visitors from overseas don’t ever hear about, let alone see. Some of these places are by their very nature remote, rough and ready which is half of their appeal for us. Added service and comfort can easily be supplied; other options are more of a full service. It’s a question of choice and budget.
Hospitality
The high end hunting and fishing packages are full on, 4-5 star all inclusive affairs. If you want a more earthy, wild experience, we can do that too. Whatever you choose, you will be well fed and watered...
Accommodation
Again, there are high end options in luxurious lodges. If you want a more earthy, wild experience, we can do that too - very comfortable farm and bush lodges, bush camps, cook on a fire out in the veld under stars. Cost vary with your preferences. You won't be disappointed either way.
Birds
Several species of duck and geese (including the Spurwing, the world's largest goose), Pigeon and Doves, Guinea Fowl, Francolin. All sporting; some more challenging than others, largely dependent of terrain and conditions. When we take you Greywing shooting over Pointers in the mountains, you might think you’re Grouse shooting in Northern England or Scotland.
Rather than Boar we have Warthog and Bush Pig, and then of course there's the huge diversity of other Game, small to very large: Bontebok, Blesbuck, Wildebeest, Waterbuck, Zebra, Impala of various colour strains, Sable, Oryx (Gemsbok), Nyala, Kudu, Eland, Bushbuck, Red Hartebeest, Mountain Reedbuck, all the Springbok colours strains. The list goes on...
Topography
There are seven biomes in South Africa; six of them occur in the Eastern Cape. You may find yourself glassing on high cliffs watching for game, stalking in thick or broken bush, walking up over dogs in the high mountains of the escarpment for Greywing, working a surround in the grasslands for Guinea Fowl, flighting Waterfowl or Sand Grouse into water or standing in hides for Pigeon and Doves. The variety is huge and all under big African skies that will leave an imprint on your mind you won't forget.
Conservation Efforts
Hunting and shooting go hand in with conservation. One would not exist without the other. This is a fact that has been proven over and over. We will gladly show you how we manage the herds, allow them to breed up and maintain healthy numbers whilst managing predation levels. With enough notice we can also introduce you to some of the leaders in the fight against Rhino poaching at some of the many game reserves in the area.
About the hosts
Your South African hosts are friendly and relaxed, as is the way here, but extremely organised behind the scenes in all instances. If you book a inclusive package you will be looked after and attended to from the moment you step off the plane till the time you leave and want for nothing. In other instances you can be left to your own devices until the business starts, should that be how you want to do it. There's something to suit everyone.
Pricing
We offer a wide range of options and we ask you to talk to us about what you are looking to do and we will custom build and price it around what you tell us. Hunting relative to Europe and the US is very fairly priced and widely available. The bird shooting relative to prices that seem to have soared in the UK and Europe look inexpensive, even when you account for the cost of your flights to get here. Shoots range from $500-800 (just a few driven shoots reach $2000 but that is another story), but the difference is that it's all inclusive of excellent board and lodgings and staff on hand to ensure you have everything you need. Again, whichever price bracket you choose, you won't be disappointed.
Travel information
What we do is primarily in the wider area surrounding Grahamstown (Makhanda), in the Eastern Cape, equidistant between Port Elizabeth and East London. Regular flights arrive from the country’s main hubs to both airports. The region is Malaria Free. Other trips involve travelling further afield.
Final thoughts
What we have here is outstanding in so many ways, the open spaces are vast and the atmosphere is easy, yet somehow seemingly as yet undiscovered. The variety of species and terrain is so surprising. If you're coming from a densely populated environment, it will take your breath away.
And if anyone wants to fish as well while you're here, please talk to us! There are equally breathtaking, world class options waiting for you.
Whatever you do, the overall immersive experience is what you will take home with you, as well as the outstanding fieldsports you have experienced.
