West Country

Plunging V shaped valleys produce pheasants and partridges to humble the most competent shots.

The beautiful landscapes of the West Country have long been acknowledged as the spiritual home of high pheasant shooting. From South Devon and Cormwall up to the North Devon Coast encompassing Exmoor and Dartmoor. This is the home of outstanding high bird shooting.

A perfect example of what the West Country has to offer is the Howe Wood Drive at Miltons. This drive is quite simply stunning both visually and in showing birds. Guns stand in a meadow through which the River Exe meanders, surrounded by vertiginous slopes wooded with oak resplendent in autumn foliage. Adroit beating through well-managed cover produces an extraordinarily steady flow of eye-wateringly high pheasants that cascade over the guns for up to 45 minutes of sporting heaven. This is typically of of drives throughout the West Country.

As you would expect from an area with so many shooting venues the hospitality is fantastic and there are a range of shooting accomodation locally which are used to looking after the demands of a shooting party.

Within easy access by train, car and plane via Exeter and Bristol airports and with sport of this calibre, a sojourn to the West Country should be high on every gun's list.

Our history

In the mid 1970s, a Canadian entrepreneur recruited Chris Orssich to start Roxtons, a sporting agency. Based in Hungerford above the shop of the same name, which was also part of the business at the time, the company grew rapidly.

In 1991, Roxtons became the first company to offer Atlantic salmon fishing on the celebrated Varzuga River in Russia's Kola Peninsula. It also offered exclusive access to several of the world's premier shoots, at estates such as Drynachan and Newlands in Scotland, Stanage of the Welsh border, Miltons, and Prescombe in England, as well as Fuensauco and La Nava in Spain. Roxtons has also been a key player in the development of some of the most exciting salt water, blue water and fresh water fisheries for decades.

Today, Roxtons continues to be at the forefront of sporting innovation, running the largest and oldest "roving syndicate", an informal club, which gives customers acccess to more than 20 partridge or pheasant days per season, in locations around the world.
