Pheasant

We are a friendly working syndicate of 18 Guns based in the administrative county of Bath & NE Somerset, putting down 900 pheasants.

Shooting 8 days, plus a couple of small walk rounds and January 31st or February 1st we have average bags of 40 birds, standing nine guns in each of two teams. On alternate shoot days, one team will stand the morning and beat the afternoon and vice versa, such that each gun shoots half a day, or three drives, and beats the other half.

The shoot is situated over approx 750 acres of mixed woodland, ponds and pasture with a good number of large double hedged gulleys. The topography covers a height differential of some 50 metres plus giving a mix of average to good height birds.

We have a ready supply of beaters, in addition to the syndicate team, plus pickers up and have the services of a couple of part time keepers.

Each shoot day we start at 9.30 AM, take a short lunch break (bring your own) after three drives and then shoot a further three drives finishing up around 3 PM.

All shooting must be with fibre wadded cartridges with a maximum load of 32g No 5.

There is a work party of approx 6 hours on the first Saturday of each month from April to August of which each member is expected to attend at least three.

Annual cost, which includes BASC membership is £1,000.

There is a 'cap' of £20 per session shot

We aim to have a heavily discounted, quality, end of season dinner.

Hospitality

Bring your own food and pay for your choice of meal at the pub. Shoot supplies port and whisky. Very convivial atmosphere and family oriented. We have a very good quality annual dinner at a heavily discounted price for guns, beaters etc and their other halves.

Topography

A good range of hills and valleys with woodland parcels, open pasture, large double hedged gullies and one cover crop.

Conservation Efforts

We are very keen on conservation and only cut rides etc in strict periods of time. We have erected a good number of nest boxes and work to encourage flora and fauna wherever we can.

About the hosts

Couldn't find a nicer bunch of people!!! ..... well, we like us!!!

A real mix across the social spectrum from those with a farming background, professionals, engineers, contractors etc. Everyone is welcome and we have no 'clicky' elements.

A thick skin and a willingness to engage would be an advantage!!

Excellent , very friendly family shoot with all ages beating and shooting and a good ethos towards wildlife management. Shoot provided a handbook containing all the rules and regs prior to arrival which is s great ideal and a good insight. Good friendly banter amongst the guns and a Great variety of drives and well presented birds and the beaters and pickers work hard. A good bag of lovely birds at the end of the day. Very enjoyable, would definitely recommended a day if one is available.
