The shoot was established in 2000 as a mixed partridge and pheasant shoot with some duck. Woodcock are often seen later in the season. There has been sport on Novar Estate under the custodianship of the same family for more than 200 years while still keeping up to date with current day thinking. It is a professionally run, welcoming and friendly shoot that invites teams of friends to spend an enjoyable day together. It is ideally suited to groups of six to eight guns. Dogs are an important part of the day. We welcome guns who wish to bring their own dogs or our eperienced pickingup team will ensure game is gathered efficiently at the end of the drives.
Hospitality
The lunch hut is in the heart of the shoot with WC facilities. There is a welcoming wood-burning stove and the building is entirely candle-lit. Lunch is served at a large wooden table to include a hot main course, homemade fruitcake, cheee and fruit. Red and white wine are included with lunch.
Topography
Natural hill ground from the edge of the River Alness to the margins of the heather hill with birch and mixed woodland. Some drives are in valleys and some are more open. One even uses a "grouse butt" principle. Guns can be driven close to each drive but a reasnable level of fitness is required.
Conservation Efforts
There is an ongoing effort to plant and maintain amenity woodland as habitat for game birds and the numerous other bird species that cohabit in this environment. Game crops are direct sown to eliminate the need for ploughing. All game is used in the human food chain.
About the hosts
The day is hosted by Roland van Oyen, the steward of Novar Estate and previously head keeper. The current headkeeper, Aaron Winton, will also be on hand to make sure the guns have an enjoyable day.
