Lake Vyrnwy

Set high in the Berwyn Mountains lies probably one of Wales’ best kept secrets. Managed by the same team since 1987, the Lake Vyrnwy Shoot is set in 24,000 acres of moorland, steep bracken banks and both hard and soft wood forests.  Famed for providing exceptional and challenging sport, the natural topography is a game shooters dream.

Ours season starts around the second week of October through until the end of January.  The early part of it can see bags varying in size of up to 400 birds down to 100 or so wisened old birds in January.  A typical shoot day at Vyrnwy would start with the team of Guns having breakfast from 8.00am in the award-winning restaurant.  They would then meet the shoot captain outside the hotel at approximately 9:20am for a safety brief.  From here we would move off in the vintage shoot wagon to the first drive. Five drives a day is the standard average for us at Vyrnwy; stopping for coffee and hot sausages after the second, then depending on how the day and bag is going we would run another two drives before stopping for a short break down on the lakeside for soup and sandwiches.  One show piece drive such as Tynewydd, TynGarreg Garis South or North would be then shown to end the day.  Our reasons for not stopping for lunch are that it enables us to make the most of the dark winter days. Guns would then return to the Hotel for either a light afternoon tea or full shoot lunch.

Guns always enjoy the fact that any shot birds they require are dressed and vacuum packed ready for them to take.

Helicopter facilities
