The Pereiro Hunting Estate, with approximately 10.000hectares (24.700acres) is located in the inland hills of the Algarve region, just 30 km away from the coast.
This beautiful but harsh landscape has become more and more desert and wild due to the migration of its inhabitants to the city centres in search of a better life.
Thanks to its hilly landscape, low annual rain fall precipitation and mild temperatures, availability of food and wide spread availability of water thanks to its 12km long river that crosses the property, this wild region is home to one of the best partridge country terrains in the Iberia Peninsula, allowing a much higher annual average of born chicks per couple of partridge than elsewhere.
Besides the 300 small man made spread allotments across the property where the partridges can eat and drink and the annual 1000 hectares (2.500 acres) of wheat grown each year, based on a 4 years rotation scheme, thousands of feeding and drinking spots were created through out the hunting estate.
Out of the total 10.000 hectares, one fifth of the area are left unshoot, acting as a nursery and sanctuary for the birds in order to create a stronger population.
Although the majority of the estate soil is poor, thanks to a careful four-year rotation scheme an annual 1000 hectares small feeding strips per year are planted using 4x4 tractors, mainly of wheat and oatmeal, in order to feed naturally the birds.
The field is very wild and hilly, and so it’s difficult for hunting in the sense that the birds are all natural and they fly very high so it’s not easy to shoot them. The success of a hunting day depends essentially on hunters’ skills.
The season starts in October and ends in January.
