BANDIRRAN ESTATE

Bandirran Estate, Perthshire

Nestling in the Sidlaw Hills, Bandirran totals about 5000 acres. Starting near Balbeggie at 400 feet, the land rises through fertile arable land and clover leys to upland grass and finally heather moorland at 950 feet. On the southerly slopes several river valleys slice through the hill as the steep ground drops down to 150 feet overlooking the Carse of Gowrie. A great variety of sport benefits from these contours.

Keeper, Jim Park, who has been at Bandirran for 25 years, has overseen many improvements to the shoot. His knowledge of the estate is invaluable and helps to ensure that the guns are given an enjoyable and challenging day. The shoot manager, Bill Black, who runs the day, will be well known to many of the shooting fraternity.

Partridge days start at in mid October where the steep valleys on the uplands provide some testing birds. The Devil’s Elbow drive is very scenic and great sport whilst Lynn McGray and Westlaws offer a serious challenge. Here, a track runs deep into the valley beside the burn, and bridges have been constructed for the gunsto stand on whilst tackling the high exciting birds.

By mid November the attention turns to pheasants, where driven days include favourite drives  such as Cauldside, Frankleyden Rocks, Whitemyre and Tanya’s Trial. Catering for all tastes and skills, a great day is ensured.

Smaller days on outside drives can also provide testing birds, and some walked up days can also be arranged with woodcock, snipe and ducks adding variety, according to the season.

Meeting at the Mill Farm Lunch Room, the day starts with coffee during a briefing. We then move out for two drives. There’s a break for elevenses followed by two further drives. The party then returns to the lunch room for a full lunch complete with pre lunch drinks ,wine and port. Finally, one or two drives are taken in the afternoon. The day is rounded off with a cup of tea back at the lunch room, where a glass of whisky can aid the story telling and reminiscing of a wonderful day’s shooting in Perthshire.

Mr. Martin Walport

I was fortunate enough to be invited to Bandirran for a partridge day last season.(2009) by a grateful client, Fabulous day, despite early mist, then rain. Well organised and well presented birds. Fast birds with only split seconds to see them! Will be going back this season 2010 and I have already marked the day as a highlight of next season.
