Partridge

Balquhandy is a 400 acre farm situated in the Ochil Hills 3 miles south of the village of Dunning, rising from 550ft to 1200ft above sea level. It is owned and run by the shoot manager's family for the last 20 years and the shoot is centered around 2 steep glens, Dunning Glen and Balquhandy Glen. We have created 11 drives over the years after getting an audit from The Game Conservancy, transforming the landscape from a featureless livestock farm into a diversified mosaic of woods and grass It is designed as an early season partridge shoot with challenging high birds, and our season focusses on 100 bird days in September and October. The shoot is inclusive and enthusiastic. Everyone beating or picking up has been with us for years and are involved with the syndicate or taking let days themselves. If you are passing we would love to show you round!

Hospitality

Tea Coffee and Biscuits on arrival at the shoot hut. Hot elevenses at the BBQ hut at the bottom of Dunning Glen and a hot 2 course lunch back at the shoot hut provided by the renowned local pub, The Kirkstyle. All food and drink is provided but please note we don't provide alcoholic refreshment so that you will need to bring.

Topography

The topography is what makes Balquhandy. The shoot is centered around two main glens, one is shot in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Guns are generally pegged by the burn and birds driven across.

Conservation Efforts

The owner has personally planted many tens of thousands of trees and shrubs after advice from The Game Conservancy audit back in 2006. Duck ponds and wader scrapes have been created and the grassland is managed in the spring for waders and ground nesting birds. Predator control has been a major reason for increasing the population of curlews in the spring.

About the hosts

Gus Greenlees is the owner/host. He has shot all his life and his passion is walked up woodcock shooting, the wilder the better. At agricultural college his dissertation was incorporating a partridge shoot into an arable enterprise, and his interests haven't changed much in intervening 40 years. He is a part time fishing and shooting instructor at Gleneagles Hotel and spends his spare time in the winter working his dogs beating or picking up at local shoots.
