Wheatley Farm Shoot
The shoot is a small farm shoot with a very friendly atmosphere with good relationship between guns, pickers up and beaters, all out for a relaxing and enjoyable day. Numbers of birds shot are not the driving force, an enjoyable relaxing day is. The shoot was established twelve years ago consequently the infrastructure is now well established therefore the costs, in the main, are focused on land rent, released birds and feed.
Shooting is over approximately 4500 acres including woodland, cover crops and areas of mixed agricultural land around the Collingham area near Newark, Notts. There are 10 areas of woodland with 8 release pens and in the order of 20 acres of cover crops varying from maize/millet/sun flower/kale to perennials crops providing nesting areas for game and cover throughout the year. The shoot has a good stock of Grey Partridge, with the perennial crops helping to support their increase. There are 8 duck ponds 2 of which are large gravel workings one of which can provide a drive on a days shooting.
Shooting is driven, including pheasant, partridge and duck. Drives are from cover crops, woodland and over ponds. Pheasants, partridge and ducks are released each year. The numbers released each year are to meet and expectation of around 70 birds on a days shooting, last season the average daily bag was in excess of 80. We have a significant stock of wild birds, and of cause residual numbers from previous years supplementing the released birds.
The shoot comprises ten blocks of woodland, eight ponds and several cover crops of maze, millet and sunflower. Although the topography is fairly flat testing pheasant are presented on many of the drives.
Hospitality
Bring your own lunch, however, tea and coffee is available. A microwave cooker is also available for those that want to warm any food that they have brought.
Topography
Although the land is fairly flat there can be some very challenging pheasants. The woodland consists of mature ash, beach and oak consequently birds do have to climb to exit the covers.

What a great first opening day we had. Bill giving any advise and organising the guns Great drives all day long.Pheasants flew well and were plentifull thanx to our keeper Chris who had worked hard all year to show plenty of quality birds. Also the beaters working well throughout the long day with super dogs retrieving birds (a joy to watch). A decent bag for the seasons start. Looking forward to the next shoot day when me and my brother can down more.

Been involved with Wheatley Farm shoot and Spalford shoot for three seasons as a beater, half gun at Wheatley and full gun in the syndicate started at Spalford last season. Thanks to the hard work and planning put by the shoot captain Bill Wilkinson, keeper Chris Balwin and a few helpers the season was a very good one exceeding the bags. l joined the Spalford shoot because for me it ticked all the boxes, compact, diverse, easily accessable and great value and the birds were either faster than in previous years or l am slowing down, to be truthful the latter is the case. lt was a pleasure to shoot with the new syndicate members at Spalford and if a place becomes available on this shoot or Wheatley shoot l have no hesitation in recommending them T.R.T Collingham, Newark.

Shot at Wheatley Farm on Thursday 20th December. Nice bunch of people which is more than can be said for the weather - rain throughout with a brisk wind. Managed six drives before we all decided to call it a day at lunchtime. 38 head in all with eight guns, and a reduction in price as a result. Birds flew well, particularly the partridge. A great day despite the weather. I would strongly recommend this shoot, if you get the chance to have a day, take it.
