Whitfield Estate in Northumberland is one of the UK’s top Shoots, offering guns the opportunity to shoot Grouse, Pheasant and Partridge. Set between Alston and Hexham in fabulous countryside, the shoot is run by Stuart Maughn, the Head Keeper who has been at Whitfield since 1982 and has developed the shoot's fine reputation over the years.

Hospitality

Lunch is an important part of the day and is provided at The Elks Head, with good food and wine.

You can also stay - The Elks Head is owned and managed by Whitfield Estate and has 10 very reasonably priced bedrooms, with very comfortable beds and ensuite showers or baths. All the rooms were refurbished in 2010.

Topography

Covering 15,000 acres, the estate has three grouse moors capable of providing between 50-275 brace days. Partridges are shot in open valleys and around the edges of the grouse moors on terrain that lends itself to presenting top quality, good high birds.

The Pheasant’s at Whitfield are legendary. They are presented in deep wooded valleys and from woodland off the moors. Drives can be selected from intermediate, high and extreme.

Stuart Maughan and his team run a simply stellar shoot at Whitfield; as has been alluded to elsewhere, you don't go there to boost your confidence or your season's average ratio, but you will leave with a slightly sore shoulder, a smile on your face and good memories.

An absolutely superb day , the birds were simply unbelievable. The Pheasants on the first drive and partridge on the second were the highest I’ve ever seen . An extreme day is not for the faint hearted , it will certainly test the even best shots to the limit of their ability .

Ive been shooting for over 30 years and thought I could shoot! If you want a challenge this is the place to go.Without a doubt a fantastic shoot ,run by Stuart and his team to perfection .The best day that I have ever had ,I cant wait to go back .

Mr David Carrie

if you want to be challenged this is the place, the fields top 50 shots certainly don't come here for their averages or to enhance their shooting reputations. Some of the drives are the most breathtaking and daunting in the world of game shooting but there are still days for all types of abilities. Stuart Maughn like Frank Croft of Warter Priory shoot is a hard working professional keeper who knows his stuff and runs the drives with military precision always moving guns so no one is left out of the shooting, if you want the challenge of a life time then book the extreme.
