The Carham shoot provides a fun day out in rolling countryside, involving about 150 acres of woods set in mixed farmland running over four ridges. We always let to whole parties, mostly of about 8 guns, but 6 to 10 is fine. From a skeleton of larger woods, the shoot has grown through a network of smaller coverts and the odd game strip to offer three full day’s shooting. Carham provides varied and interesting shooting, a lot of fun and an excellent day out. The open character of the countryside gives the wind every opportunity to play a part – which can really add to the excitement.

The shoot is based on pheasants, all home-reared or wild, with occasional guest appearances from wild partridges – there are plenty of them, but normally they manage to avoid being shot! Days are based on target bags of 150 up to 400, but mostly around 200 birds. Although most parties consist of 8 guns, anything from 6 to 10 can be accommodated happily for single days or back-to-back, as required. We provide a proper lunch in our farmhouse - and are happy to include non-shootists. We always let days as a whole to one party.

Hospitality

A full lunch is provided in our farmhouse, with all drinks included. Mid-morning soup and some eats are provided (in the field, unless shelter is needed). Main course and soup are all home-cooked and normally based on local game.

Great couple of back to back days. Despite the horrendous weather Peter and team laid on some superb shooting. Strong, fast and high birds made all the more challenging by the high winds.

Eight happy guns!. Two years shooting at Carham and going back for more this year. This shoot has everything, a convinial host in Peter Straker-Smith, experienced keeper in Chris Hemmingway, cheery and sociable beaters and pickers-up, who all take great pride and pleasure in presenting the best possible birds. Hopefully we will all be going back for many years to come.

Mr Paul Chapman

This year will be the third successive year we've shot at Carham and it's fast becoming a 'must have' in our shooting calendar. Peter Straker-Smith puts on a hugely professional and efficient day with consistent, challenging birds and warm hospitality coupled with a minimum amount of wasted time transferring between drives. I took two teams there last year and each member has asked to take the same days again, it truly was the benchmark by which other shoots were subsequently compared.
