The Wykeham shoot as featured in the Shooting Gazette, 2015.
The Wykeham Shoot offers a wide range of partridge and pheasant shooting. The shoot is centred around the family home of the Viscount Downe at Wykeham Abbey, which is located between Pickering and Scarborough on the southern fringes of the North York Moors. The steeply wooded valleys running down from the Moors provide a stunning setting for presenting spectacular high birds.
The pheasant shooting is divided between the high birds on the Bedale, Yedmandale and Sawdon dale beats (three steep valleys carved in to the edge of the Moors) or the more traditional shooting around Wykeham Abbey. The partridge shooting covers the whole shooting Estate (approx 4000 acres) with much of the shooting over grass or arable dales. Very often there is a mix of partridge and pheasant through November, December and even January - challenging shooting at the best of times!
Many of the drives are memorable to include the curling high partridge and pheasants on the Spinney drive, or the wide open challenging high pheasants on Clear Fell drive. Jenny Spring drive in Yedmandale offers a surprise with partridge and pheasant flushed over the tops of majestic Douglas Fir – not much time to think!
On arrival the guns drive through the Park for coffee and a briefing in the Tack Room. The lunch takes place in the 'Old Kitchen' which is the former kitchen for Wykeham Abbey. The original ranges are lit and the surrounding dressers are displayed with pewter and kitchen china and porcelain - a special atmosphere for a shooting lunch.
Bags are between 200 and 350 birds. Prices are inclusive of all hospitality, and no overage is charged ( - the price is fixed for the day).
The Wykeham shoot prides itself in offering relaxed, friendly but challenging shooting in really beautiful surroundings. The guns are met by the head keeper and host on arrival, and it is almost as if it is the guns own the shoot for the day, avoiding some of the worst aspects of running a commercial shoot.

Having shot on the high ground several times I can vouch for the quality of the pheasants as being top quality high driven birds, the days are always run efficiently and in a relaxed friendly manner with the emphasis on having a great day's sport!
