Spectacular Sporting Estate offering some of the most exciting driven grouse shooting available and has an spectacular pheasant shoot offering challenging sport across all it's drives. Nestled in the Yorkshire dales, 30 minutes drive from Harrogate in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.
Ramsgill is almost unique as (subject to grouse stocks), early pheasant days can be made up of a mix of two grouse and three pheasant drives.
Ramsgill has always been a renowned grouse moor but the equally spectacular pheasant shoot was developed by the owner's father and was named by Simon Ward as one of Yorkshire's top twenty pheasant shoots.
Ramsgill is very much a family shoot which only offers a very limited number of shooting days to a largely returning client base. It is only as a result of uncertainty of securing poults this year meant that some teams had arranged days elsewhere that these limited days have become available.
Hospitality
If shooting grouse, a gourmet lunch (Baxter's potted shrimps etc) is normally in the spectacular shooting hut in the centre of the moor, which is arguably one of the finest in the country (built in 1876). If shooting pheasants, we would stop for refreshments in the field, soup, pies (from Kendalls in Pateley and and fizz in the Crimean War railway carriage and dependant upon the teams requirements followed up by (typically) Roast Beef at the Sportman's Arms in Wath.
There are a wide selection of pubs and hotels to stay nearby which will satisfy all requirements, anything from a traditional Dales pub with a wide selection of ales, whisky's and characters, to the world renowned 5* Grantley Hall which boasts a SPA that makes a welcome diversion for some partner's on a very wet day.
Topography
As the name Ramsgill suggests, the "gill" or "ghyll" runs through the centre of the Estate, with drives on opposite hillsides. The woodland has been out for pheasant shooting and the layout means that even though the birds are stunning high pheasants, you can see how the whole line is fairing rather than having a limited view of just your own peg. Whilst the birds are of an exceptional quality, they are also "shootable" without the need of massive loads.
Conservation Efforts
Ramsgill Estate is very proud of its conservation efforts and has embarked upon an extensive programme of peatland restoration, woodland planting and hedge laying. The Estate was also recognised for it conservation efforts by the Lauren Perrier awards, a precursor to the Purdy award.
About the hosts
Ramsgill has been in the Briggs family for three generations, it is truly been a family passion. The pheasant shoot was developed by the owner's father to extend the season if it was a disappointing year on the moor. Only letting a handful of days on the pheasants each year, it is far cry from a large commercial shoot, but James is always in attendance and knows what it takes to make a special day.
