The shooting at North Stainley estate stretches from North Stainley near Ripon to Grewelthorpe near Masham, with topography ranging from flat mixed arable lands and pastures to rolling hills, steep quarry faces and high game crop topped valleys.

The shoot has seen major investment over the last decade, creating a spectacular private shoot where there has been only one aim, to provide memorable shooting in the most attractive surroundings with superlative hospitality.

The estate is constantly investing in large scale improvements, such as woodland planting, game crop expansion, access track construction and further land acquisition.

The North Stainley end of the estate concentrates on providing smaller mixed walked up days and wild fowling, while the driven days occur mostly at the Mickley end of the estate, one of the most picturesque and quintessential parts of North Yorkshire.

Although driven Pheasants are the primary game bird, the shoots also release French and English Partridge as well as Mallard which help boost our evening flight ponds.

Most of the drives have been designed to allow very little travelling distance between them, and many you are able to walk from one to the other.

We are also members of the Trusted Game scheme.

Hospitality

A full driven day begins with a hot breakfast bap along with tea and coffee at our cozy and welcoming shoot lodge.

Elevenses are served in the field, consisting of homemade soup, estate game, and ample refreshments.

Mid shoot meal with a hearty main course utilising estate game, produced by our highly talented host and chef Will Mason. For those who enjoy something more spectacular, we can offer bespoke meals with live cooking to your preferences.

End the day back at the shoot lodge in front of the fire with charcuterie and port.

We can also offer overnight accommodation in our 8 bedroom 5*, multi award winning B&B, The Old Coach House in North Stainley, which is ideally situated in the centre of the estate, just a 5 minute drive from the shoot lodge.

Birds

Due to our varied terrain we have the ability to present shots for all levels of experience, from good 30-40 yards birds to 50-70+ yard more testing targets from drives such as those in the quarry.

We also put down a good number of partridge and fly them over tall hedges and off some of our taller drives, this gives guns a good mixed days shooting at fast traditional partridge as well as some very challenging high birds.

Topography

Flat mixed arable lands, ancient pastures intertwined with ancient native woodlands leading onto rolling hills, steep quarry faces and high game crop topped valleys. Much of the estate has had Miscanthus cover crops put in place of rotational crops, although traditional crops such as Kale are still grown. The estate has also invested heavily in biomass willow crops, which provide a welcome addition to the layout of drives.

Conservation Efforts

Over 200 acres of native woodlands and adjoining hedgerow corridors have been planted to provide habitat for not only game, but all wildlife. Much of this has been planted on what was once intensive arable land where there had historically been no woodlands. The planting has never ceased, with new native woodland blocks created annually. These are heavy on Oak, Beech and Hazel ensuring future winter food for the estates wildlife. Existing woodlands are also enjoying a structured management plan, which aims to improve tree health, create understory, and remove invasive species. Wild bird mix has been planted in numerous locations to provide good forage for songbirds. Wildfowl nesting tubes have been built on all our ponds to encourage wild birds with native trees and marshland surrounding.

About the hosts

The estate is the ancestral home of the Staveley family who have had the vision to create the layout of the land to benefit game shooting and conserve our native fauna and flora. Your shoot day is managed by Fenn Smith, who is Head Keeper and estate sporting manager along with your host Will Mason. We pride ourselves in putting on bespoke days that have a relaxed, family shoot day experience without the commercial feel.

Final thoughts

North Stainley Estate has long been the ancestral home of the Staveley family. In the early 16th Century the estate was part of Ripon parks, a huge royal hunting forest for Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey. The Staveley's were assigned 'Keepers of Ripon Parks' and tasked with looking after the royal forest. Upon Wolsey's ascension to Archbishopdome and then Cardinal of the Catholic Church, he gifted the land in a long-term lease to the Staveley's in thanks for their valuable service over the years. In 1650 the park's status as a royal hunting forest was abolished by Cromwell's anti-royalist commonwealth regime, however the Staveley's managed to hold on to parts of the estate and have ever since! If the estate was good enough for Henry VIII, we're sure you will love it too.

Can’t fault the shoot and estate, from the initial welcome by the host, meeting new faces as a single gun at the estate pub for breakfast all the way through to the end of the day your definitely made to feel like it’s your day. Having taken a number of days as a single gun this season I’ve had chance to experience quite a variety of drives, from some staggering partridge and pheasant in the quarry to great traditional parkland birds in the grounds of the house. Looking forward to next season where I’m hoping to bring our roving syndicate.

A traditional gem of a shoot. Shot here a few times this season and every aspect of it is always of the very highest standard. A warm welcome in the estate's pub for breakfast, full transport all-day around the shoot, elevenses and lunch in the immaculate shoot lodge on the estate. With a grand finale of dinner back at the estate's pub! Even through the turbulent weather/storms this season, the shoot team still managed to put quality birds over the line of guns. Some very skilful keepering and beating going on behind the scenes. As a solo gun, this is a very welcoming and friendly shoot. From both shoot staff and other guns, many of whom are regulars and they are all exceptional company.

Excellent day shooting at the end of the season. Traveling up with friends we received a warm welcome, by the other guns, must of whom had shot the estate before, along with some partners/family. Excellent mix of birds for all abilities. Every peg on every drive saw a good selection of birds. Henry & Jamie do an excellent job, plus the food will fill you up for days. Perfect last shoot for the season.

We took 3 pegs on a January boundary day and had one of our best days in a long time. The day was extremely well organised, there were plenty of birds, the beating team knew their job and Jamie controlled the drives exceptionally well. Everyone got plenty of shooting and the catering was of a very high standard. Outstanding day and highly recommended
