A private family shoot focusing on sporting bags of partridges driven in the traditional fashion over mature hedgerows and stubble. We have a loyal team of friends who have been coming here for 20 years but occasionally we look to let 1 or 2 days per season to whole teams from September to January.
Our young keeper, now in his seventh season, has been responsible for a dramatic uplift in numbers of birds shown and bags shot. We have improved the game cover and margins policy and have an aggressive predator control programme. We have seen a dramatic increase in the numbers of wild birds and particularly of English partridge.
The Estate itself consists of mature woodland, arable farmland and hedgerows. The topography, particularly in the partridge shooting grounds, could best be described as "gently rolling". Although we are in the Vale of York we make use of whatever contour lines that have been given to us. We have around 15 named drives that range from driven partridges over stubble and hedges to the more traditional pheasant drives out of mature woodland.
We aim to provide bags of 150 partridges or 200 mixed bags (later in the season).
Generally we shoot 4-5 drives in the morning, depending on the ground, and two after lunch. We are happy to change this to suit a team that wishes to "shoot through" later in the season.
The Estate shoot is run by the owner who is a keen shot. Although we abide by health and safety regulations we offer a relaxed day's sport with a friendly and helpful team of beaters and pickers-up. Please do get in touch to see if we can help you with next season's sport.
Hospitality
Please come into the house for a cup of coffee when you first arrive. Elevenses will be homemade sausage rolls with our own sloe gin/plum vodka and soup Lunch can be anything from steak and ale pie, lasagne or even salads earlier in the season! We can cater for you in the house or if you want to crack on with the day we can provide food and drink for you in the middle of the Estate in a more picnic format. The day finishes with cups of tea, homemade cakes and inevitable war stories back at the house.
About the hosts
We came back to the family estate eight years ago and are working on revitalising the shooting. We love seeing the same teams who come back here year after year. We must be doing something right! We only know if we are giving people a good time if they decide to book again for the following year. So far, so good! We have been taking a day here for many years now, and it is still always the first on our list! For us, the family have got the balance spot on between providing a welcoming, relaxed and fun day with some top quality traditional partridge shooting which seems to slightly improve every year. Also, all considered from what we have experienced elsewhere over the years, a 150 to 200 bag day here just feels like cracking value. I recommended this shoot to a friend a while back, who managed to get a day last year and he wrote to tell me that it ended up as one of the highlights of his season. Says it all!

I have been lucky enough to shoot Hutton Wandesley for a number of years. It's one of the highlights of my season; the birds, the organisation and most importantly the company has always been excellent. It's a great treat to see English Partridge which thrive under the care of the farm management and keeping teams. I would recommend HW to any keen sportsman looking for a wonderful day out.

I have shot here many times and it keeps getting better. There is a mix of traditional drives over hedgerows and high partridge over belts. Add in some wild pheasant and you have a wonderful day's shooting. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the whole team of keepers, beaters and picker-uppers do a terrific job. It is especially fun / challenging when the wind is up.

A wonderful shoot for anyone who wants to experience the intoxicating mix of exhilarating partridges bursting over tall hedges at the same time as fast high curling pheasants.
