Pheasant
Grouse

Back Ground

Within the same family ownership since 1983 the current management focus is to continue to develop a first class sporting estate and mutually supportive agricultural enterprise which together deliver a major environmental benefit. All rights are held in hand including grazing, freehold and sporting rights which gives the owners freedom to operate and achieve results.

Quarry Species

The owners are passionate about their shooting and have a strong interest in wild game. Grouse are the main sporting output but there is also a good stock in the ‘inby’ ground of wild pheasant, duck, snipe and woodcock.  Two full time keepers are employed and are tasked with looking after the grouse and’ lowland’ wild quarry in equal measure.   The Estate offers let days on the main moor for Driven Grouse as well as some less formal days for Grouse on our 'edge' ground.

Simulated Grouse and Introduction to Grouse Shooting Courses

We pride ourselves on introducing many new guns to the love of Grouse Shooting.  A popular choice is to enjoy an afternoon of extremely realistic Simulated Grouse (three butts in a line) in our purpose built Grouse practice range, followed by the real thing the next day. We use multiple state of the art ProMatic Remote Clay Traps and short horizons  to really get the blood flowing!

In and out of season we offer an Introduction to Grouse Shooting Course which includes expert tuition on the grouse practice range and a lecture on the Red Grouse. This course is designed to get you on target, instill an appreciation for the quarry,  and provide a thorough understanding of the inherent safety aspects of Grouse shooting. Finally we cover off the accepted do's and don’ts on the day itself to give you a sound footing to enjoy your first day of Driven Grouse safe in the knowledge that you are prepared as you can be!

Our Grouse range is open to experienced and novice shots alike with or without instruction.

Our Philosophy*

We strive to make your day as enjoyable as possible. A common comment from our guests is that they feel their experience has been like a family shoot day and this is what we aim to achieve. When you shoot at Coverhead your day will usually be hosted by one of the owning family. Dogs are welcome as we encourage a ‘muck in’ can do attitude from all involved.

Hospitality

Hospitality on the day is included for guns. We make a charge of 50.00 per head for additional guests to defray costs. Accommodation wise we are able to host a team of up to 15 in 8 bedrooms onsite in our shooting lodge ‘Hunters Hall’. This building was original built for Charles the 1st as hunting lodge and retains many original features. It has recently been  modernized throughout and provides an ideal place to stay either before or after your shoot day. Subject to numbers we can provide evening meals and our shoot day hospitality is legendary. The lodge has a satellite broadband connection for those who need top be in contact with the outside world.

Topography

Coverhead is located high up at the head of Coverdale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park at 1100-2000ft. This wonderfully wild Upland Estate spans three sides of the watershed at the head of the Dale and covers 3000 acres of open moorland and 2000 acres of semi improved 'inby' land interspersed with wooded gills and strategically placed plantings. Recommended footwear is high ankle boots and gaiters. The majority of the Moor is classified as Blanket bogg so can be wet underfoot. Tracks provide access to the moorland edge by 4x4 and then some walking is required to reach stone or sunken butts.

About the hosts

Your day will usually be hosted by one of the owning Mawle family. The shoot is managed by Stephen Mawle and James Mawle one of whom will be in attendance on most days. Stephen particularly enjoys enabling inexperienced grouse shots to bag their first grouse at Coverhead. Stephen's innovative Coverhead Introduction to Grouse Shooting Courses have become increasingly popular as a result.

I shot at Coverhead at the end of September 2020, I was warned that the grouse were challenging and they lived up to expectations, wild, fast and very challenging, just how I like them. Stephen and James Mawle were excellent hosts and Jim a great shoot captain. As the day was in the midst of Covid restrictions, we were provided with excellent picnic elevenses, lunch and tea. I then shot at Coverhead in early December after Lockdown 2, typically it was snowing, but we managed 2 grouse drives with a good showing of grouse, sadly the weather came in and we had to give up on the grouse, as it was unsafe for the beaters to be out in a blizzard. Instead we had the afternoon after wild pheasant and woodcock on the edge of the Moors, this was always proposed as an option if the weather stopped play on the moor, these wild pheasants were more challenging than any "high bird" shoot you go to. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend Coverhead in late September for an experienced grouse shot, and indeed I have booked 2 back to back days for October.

2nd or 3rd visit to Coverhead. Quiet first couple of drives (weather was humid and very warm). Drive just before lunch was excellent and I started to get my eye in. Lunch was great then the final drive fantastic (for me). Shot well (2:1) and busy. Back next year is the plan.

Mr. Steve Swain

This was my first taste of grouse shooting and I went for the package which included the training day prior to the shoot day. All nine guns were grouse virgins. On the 11th, we were met upon arrival by Stephen Mawle, the managing partner, where we were offered a very nice sandwich lunch and soup. We were then given a tour of the moor with a very interesting and insightful talk about grouse moor management. We also had a safety briefing with regard to operations on the 12th. We spent the rest of the afternoon with 3 professional coaches teaching us how to shoot grouse. The clays and ammunition were supplied as part of the experience. The instruction was very informative and enjoyable, despite the rain lashing down! This also allowed me to get to know the other guns. We retired to the lodge for the night, were we were served a very good quality 3 course meal, with alcohol in abundance (if one was foolish enough to overindulge!). The accommodation and facilities in the shooting lodge were first class. The following day we enjoyed 5 drives in windy but reasonably dry conditions. Some had better opportunities than others during the day (that is the nature of shooting) to shoot, but everyone had well presented and challenging birds over them. In total we shot 51 brace. Our shot/kill ratio was not great, but that is down to the guns - we certainly had a lot of opportunities to shoot presented to us. I cannot praise enough the reception, facilities, the coaching and the shooting. Being a first timer, I missed plenty but I still thoroughly enjoyed the whole package and am very grateful to Coverhead Farms and Stephen for a great experience. I'm now trying to work out how I can afford this again next year! Steve Swain

Mr. David Holt

The best and most testing grouse shooting you will have the chance to shoot at. If you really serious about wanting to be able to shoot them as they are quality WILD grouse, Not lowland flapping pheasants or partridge. Invest in the services of an instructor to load for you, you only need to shoot a couple of brace to have paid for his time!! or shoot somewhere where they are tame. prehaps at the beginning of the season when there are more and slower!!!

Shot on Monday Sept 26th September 2016 and we were treated to some very fast and highly challenging Grouse. The birds were in abundance and proved to be more than a match for the Guns. The beating team were very well organised and worked hard to push the birds through the line. The hospitality was excellent. Highly recommended.
