Gordon Castle offers pheasant shooting in the Spey River Valley in Moray, North East Scotland. The shoot will cater for driven days, partly driven and totally wild days.
Driven days will see bags of 150 birds. Partly Driven days will see bags of 80. Totally Wild days will see a bag of 30-50 birds which could include pheasant, duck, woodcock and pigeon.
Hospitality
The shoot has a very well appointed castle as well as a lodge and other cottages for overnight stays. Shoot days generally include elevenses and lunch.
Birds
Birds will be varied, some high, some at medium height and some better suited to the novice shot. We can adapt the shoot to the needs of our guests.
Duck shooting in semi darkness is always a challenge, but very rewarding.
Woodcock will appear on the forests edge and the gun will have a few seconds to decide, aim and fire - so exciting!
Topography
The shoot utilises the steep wooded banks along the River Spey to provide height for driven birds. The shoot uses the river as a central axis but also has drives right up to the rugged sea coast where the topography becomes less steep but the scenery is breath taking and on a windy coastal day the birds can present challenges of their own.
Conservation Efforts
Gordon Castle is driving a Grey Partridge re-introduction programme. This includes developing farming margins, re-introducing hedgerows and minimising insecticide spraying. Large chunks of the estate are Sites of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI's) and are conserved to a very high standard. The estate sponsors a wide ranging programme for the eradication of invasive plant species in the Lower Spey area.
About the hosts
The Gordon -Lennox family have owned Gordon Castle for many generations. They have enjoyed the shooting for many years (the oldest game book in the castle goes back to 1871). The family, the Estate Manager and the Head Keeper make guests very welcome.
