Other

We offer traditional driven hare shooting on a family run farm and estate. Days typically are between 100 and 200 head of game. We are keen to keep true sport at the forefront and the day can be tailored accordingly. Suitable for 10-30 guns.

A hare shoot is quite an orchestration. Guns, alongside pickers up and beaters will be skilfully managed by keepers who know the land and the best ways to manage the day. Long lines of guns and beaters are created with lines stretching field to field ½ mile or more. These lines may progress from different directions connecting progressively designed to drive the hare forward ultimately to a central area.

A hare may be taken in front or behind the gun line, following instruction from the keeper. With a shot, the entire line stops to allow the hare taken to be picked by either the gun making the shot or a retriever.

Hospitality

Delicious elevenses, lunches and other refreshments provided. Overnight parties can also be accommodated in the house with first class lodging and catering available to suit all needs. Any extras welcome.

Topography

The majority of the area comprises arable agricultural land divided into a regular pattern of large rectangular fields which have survived from the time of enclosure during the Early Industrial Period [1750-1845 AD]. Field boundaries are usually hedged or fenced. In addition to the arable fields, there is some woodland that provides a habitat for a range of wildlife.

Conservation Efforts

Brown hare (lepus europaeus) is a farmland animal that thrives best on arable ground. It has always been much less abundant on pasture land. It is thought to have originated in the steppes of central Asia and to have spread westward across Europe as forest was cleared for farming in the Neolithic period. The brown hare, however, did not appear in the British fauna until the Roman era. We strive for an appropriate and workable balance between the welfare and conservation of brown hares, their status as game, and their ability to cause serious damage to crops.
