The GWCT shoot at The Allerton Project is a small driven shoot guided by the principles of GWCT research over the past 100 years, offering fantastic shooting in rolling Leicestershire countryside.
Management for shooting and farmland wildlife are intrinsically interlinked, and GWCT research demonstrates the direct positive impact on wildlife, gamebird health and the environmental benefits of a well run shoot.
Following best practice guidelines and a core aim of sustainability, the shoot has evolved from a wild bird only shoot during the earlier years, through to the small released driven shoot we have today. We aim to shoot around 13 days, with the over-riding focus being on high quality birds, a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and an overall good day out ... with a bit of learning thrown in now and then!
Hospitality
A substantial elevenses is served in the field, that includes hot local game sausage rolls, Melton Mowbray pork pies and homemade cakes, as well as a range of soft and alcoholic drinks. Our shoot meal is served at the end of the day, and consists of a hearty two course meal.
Birds
Often testing birds shown off deceptively steep ground. Extensive mature hedgerows, tree belts and permanent game covers provide excellent holding cover and present birds that are sporting for the topography.
Topography
The shoot sits on the Leicestershire / Rutland border which boasts rolling mixed farmland, ancient woodlands, extensive woodland shelterbelts and mature species rich hedgerows to create a diverse and interesting landscape.
Conservation Efforts
The farm was gifted to the GWCT in 1992, and we have been carrying out research on farmland ecology ever since, providing us with series of unbroken datasets of our farmland wildlife over three decades. Much of that research has led to the development of agri-environment scheme options that are now adopted on farms across the country, such as beetle banks and supplementary winter feeding. It’s thought that 80% of the habitat options in the modern agri-environment handbook are derived at least in part from research carried out by the GWCT. Best practice game management and a focus on biodiversity net gain is a key principle governing the shoot management activities.
About the hosts
You will be hosted and guided around the Allerton Project by GWCT Advisors Amber Lole and Alex Keeble who can discuss the work of the Project, as well as answer any general shooting / conservation / land management related questions. Alternatively, just enjoy the beautiful Leicestershire countryside and have a great day out.
Final thoughts
The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust is the leading game and countryside research charity undertaking the scientific research to inform policy makers of the importance of game management within the countryside, and therefore fighting for the continuation of the industry.
