Superb driven Woodcock available on a limited basis on the Isle of Lewis & North Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Packages are for 2 days shooting with 3 nights full board accommodation staying in traditional sporting lodge, for teams of 6 - 10 guns.
Each day consists of between 8 and 10 drives in easily managed plantations which provides for exciting and challenging shooting for this most mystical of gamebirds. Although no guarantee of bag can be given, both shoots can consistently provide bags of 30 - 50 birds per day. The best 2 days on both shoots were acheived by 7 guns accounting for 103 & 113 at a cartridge - kill ratio of 3 to 1.
Daily flights are available from a number of UK airports via Edinburgh, Glasgow & Inverness into Stornoway & Benbecula airports on the Islands. On arrival at the airport clients are collected and transfered to the lodge and briefed on what to expect over the following 2 days.
A full safety brief is given by the keeper at the lodge prior to be taken to the shooting areas.

Mr. Russell Hird
Alex & Jean Baptiste Bretet - Lyon 11.11.13 Merci Russell tout est ok,de l'organisation aux moments de chasse. un sejour royal de grand plaisir. Merci a Toi Russell. A bientot Jean-Baptiste Torsten & Birgitta - Sweden.23.10.13 Thank you for your kindness and skill that you have given to us last week. We really have enjoyed our visit in Stornoway with the hunting and social life. It has been very nice and I will just give positive recommendations to my friends when they ask. We think that the last day was the best even though it was raining; it was with great pleasure that we followed your stalk, the pace suited us well and we were very impressed how careful you were when trying to get the "plumber" in position for what I think you would have called "a penalty shot". We were very pleased to experience the lunch after the shot, the fine feeling of respect for the hind and the good outcome of your performance. I hope that you had the same feeling! And then the rest of the day, sending retired people to retrieve your car......your wonderful dogs......your family......the pub.....and finally our dinner at the hotel. Thank you Russell, we have something to talk about all the dark nights until the light will return. John Thompson & John Wilson - Cumbria - 06.10.13 Thanks for the photos--I will print them out for my shooting diary. We got back just about midnight. I wish to thank you & indeed everybody that contributed to our couple of days. The dog work and the sport ( and the grub) were first rate as far as I am concerned--I just wish I was fitter (or younger!!!),It was all a most enjoyable experience--- the craic was also good--often a surprisingly small world with many mutual acquaintances. Thank Iain for his help, Eric, the Laird and son (and the entertainment on Monday night--that was the most JW had drunk for along while), Best Regards to Iain and yourself, and hope to see you again John Thompson and John Wilson Peter Billings - Australia - 31.08.13 I hope you're well and have had a good summer and also those wonderful gundogs of yours; I have enjoyed telling my friends about our time on Lewis- more about you and the dogs than me and the grouse! Hope to hear from you soon. Jean-Marc Triquet - Normandy - 06.01.13 With regard to our stay, actually, very windy conditions did not stop Russell to locate or to stop with his dogs Woodcock as easily as expected... Nevertheless, his hunting organization and the quality of his dogs are blameless; on 70 Woodcock flushed in 5 days, 25 about were at the stop of the dogs and 21 killed. Peter Billings - Australia - 20.12.12 Firstly let me thank you for taking us shooting. It was a most enjoyable experience notwithstanding my rather mediocre form with the gun(s). Your expertise finding game, guiding me as to where to stand, look, shoot was first rate and the dogs and your interaction with them unforgettable! All in all it was a delight to be with you over the two days and I also must thank you for your part in sorting out the issue with the gun's serial number which, incidentally has still not been sorted. Also thank you for organizing my visitor's permit etc. Overall it went very well, in no small part due to your own excellent professional guiding and support. I'd like to think it might happen again. Jeremy Gordon - London - 09.01.13 We all had a great time and that was very much down to the way you looked after us. It was a memorable few days and the woodcock on top of the mountain will stay with me forever! I hope you will have us back Ian Lumsden - Derbyshire - 08.12.12 Russell, just a brief note to register my appreciation for the 2 days shooting I had with you recently. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and consider it to have been the most interesting game bird shooting I have ever done. The setting and the guiding were first class and made for a memorable trip. I intend to repeat the experience. Nigel Davis - Derbyshire - 02.12.12 Many thanks to you, Maureen and Iain for such a memorable trip to The Western Isles. We all enjoyed it tremendously especially watching the dogs work and being waited on hand and foot! Maureen is an absolute star. We shall be back - I shall be sooner than later! Moritz Fehrer Germany - 10.11.12 Being back on the mainland I could not find the time yet to thank you for the excellent organization of our trip this year. I assume you are again out with clients and your excellent Vizslas? Thierry Gaymard Marseille - 17.12.11 I do want to take the opportunity to thank you for the wonderful sight we got to see and the amazing work of your dogs that I enjoyed so much watching pointing. Paul Hugenholtz & Jan Lantsheer - Netherlands - 01.02.11 Your efforts to make this a truly special occasion for us, was very impressive and this really brought everything we hoped it would. This is shooting as it should be, beautiful wild birds in their natural habitat, raw and unspoiled nature. We will surely stay in touch. Nicholas Taylor, Texas, USA - 13 10 2009 The grouse hunt on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland was great fun. We shot the limit of 10 grouse in two days. Russell is a first rate guide and his dogs were extraordinarily good. Andrew Blair - Bristol - 11.09.09 A rather late thank you for all your efforts. There always seems to a mass of work to come back to whenever I go away. Everyone enjoyed themselves and I was very pleased to shoot my first grouse. Nigel and Hamish are going to need a bit of tuition for next year now we know how it works Nick & Harry Bannister - Conniston Hall - 11.01.10 Happy New Year to you. It seems to have been such a long time since Harry shot his first stag on that memorable day on Lewis back in August. We had the most wonderful time with you. Jeremy Davis - Cardiff - 08.10.09 I would like to thank you once again for all your very hard work (not to mention that of your wonderful dogs!) and for organising our stay at Scaliscro. The shooting (and in my case getting to the shooting) and the scenery in which it took place was breathtaking. The four of us hugely enjoyed ourselves and that is all thanks to you. Hywel - Cardiff - 25.09.10 I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed shooting with you and your marvellous dogs. In the words of a World War II general: "I shall return". All the best for the rest of the season! Nick Lagattolla - London - 30.08.10 Hi Russell, Many thanks for trying to fit us in. It won't work out this year, unfortunately, but I'll let you know if we can for the next year. I remember your pointers very well, definitely the best I have ever shot over! Robin Simms - London - 19.09.11 Wonderful day last Tuesday Grouse shooting. Hope to do it again next year. Will be passing on your details to a friend who may be in touch. Meanwhile thank you for a brilliant experience with your fantastic dogs.
