The Walnut Tree shoot has been established for in excess of 40 years, traditionally run as a private shoot and more latterly a syndicate shoot. The rare opportunity has arisen for teams of guns to take occasional days on the shoot. Our season starts in October and the days available are generally Saturdays.
We are located only 30 minutes north of London, 10 minutes from Hitchin train station with easy links from the A1 and M1.
Bags range will be between 150 – 200 birds depending on the teams aspirations.
The guns are transported around on a shoot day by a custom build utilitarian gun bus, which provides a comfortable and warm ride as well as plenty of storage for kit and ammunition. We are fortunate to have a regular, local and cheery beating team who take pride in delivering quality drives whilst enjoying the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside which we feel is fundamental to what we do best.
We are able to offer premium accommodation, subject to availability to teams of guns nearby at the magnificent Redcoats Farmhouse as well as transport to and from. Other accommodation is also available nearby.
Hospitality
At the start of the day guests will be greeted by our hosts, at Highdown Farm in our lovingly restored and converted shoot lodge. Guests will enjoy breakfast rolls accompanied by tea and coffee.
Refreshments and substantial elevenses are served from our purpose-built gun bus throughout the day, followed by a late two course lunch and drinks following the last drive. A range of traditional spirits associated with the sport will be available to warm the cockles on a cold winters day.
We are able to be flexible with hospitality so please let us know when you enquire if you have specific requirements.
Topography
The shoot is run over 2,000 acres of beautiful and undulating Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire countryside which boasts 12 different drives. Including 100 acres of woodland, substantial tree belts and game covers which provides for varied and challenging birds.
Conservation Efforts
Ben & Sam have a keen interest in conservation and countryside management. Our game covers consist of maize, AB8 (Flower Rich Margins) and AB9 (Winter Bird Feed Mixes).
They have unprecedented knowledge of the lay of the land and take a hands on approach to the habitat and feedstock management in conjunction with the wider farming enterprise.
About the hosts
The shoot is run by brothers Ben and Sam who have in excess of 25 years’ experience in producing and delivering quality sporting birds for the enjoyment of the guns in a professional and friendly atmosphere.
