Lilley Manor and Lilley Manor Farm were owned by the Sowerby family for many generations and it was a renowned shoot. The farm was purchased in 1999 by Christopher and Penny Rogers who quickly set about re-establishing the shoot. In the past the location of historic woods had enabled a good pheasant shoot without the addition of game cover; now extensive game cover is planted in six locations both to improve the pheasant shooting and also to suit the addition of partridges

An existing farm building was demolished and replaced by a purpose-designed shoot lodge. This building has a large dining room which can seat 16 people for lunch and a large club fender in front of an open fire. The owner has frequently experienced what he has regarded as inadequate facilities at many shoots around the country and he has tried to provide everything needed in a decent shoot lodge including two WCs for the Guns and a separate washroom for ladies

The lodge has a separate dining area for the beaters with two WCs and a cold room for the shot game.

The pheasant poults and the partridges are released early enough to ensure that they are fully matured and ready to shoot by mid-October.

Lilley Manor Farm, which is situated adjacent to Lilley Manor, has its own drive located at the northern end of the village of Lilley.

Lilley itself can be accessed from the A505 and is only 15 minutes drive from Junction 10 of the M1. If approaching from the East or the A1 it is best to avoid passing through Hitchin. Lilley is less than 40 miles from central London

Hospitality

Breakfast (which is optional) is usually full English and our preferred lunch is roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes and vegetables followed by pudding or cheese and coffee; however our chef can provide almost any food requested, including Thai food, which some people find a pleasant change from the ‘usual’ shoot lunch. A wide selection of canapes are served with drinks before lunch. All wine and other drinks are included in the cost of the day.

Topography

The shoot has the benefit of being situated in the Chiltern Hills and five of the drives have both pheasants and partridges being driven over valleys. Whilst the birds are not at the extreme height that can be found at some of the shoots in the West Country they are at a very sporting height yet able to be cleanly killed by a proficient shot. Guns who do most of their shooting at ‘high bird’ shoots often struggle to shoot the partridges on the Kings Hill drive. There is a line of high pylons running through some of the drives but it does not adversely affect them; if anything it makes the birds fly higher. The shoot is well situated for a team of 8 Guns and a bag of 300 head; good teams of Guns usually exceed 300 and sometimes achieve up to 700.

Mr. Thomas Adams

A kind invitation by owner Chris Rogers, who is a gentleman through and through. The shoot produces some fabulous shooting, with pheasants and partridge being shown from game covers and hanging woods. The topography is very exciting indeed especially so close to London. Chris out does himself with his hospitality with fabulous food served from freshly made canapes and stunning roast beef to a full english breakfast in the morning. The day light hours are made up of shooting which is a nice change with 6 drives being shot in a day as opposed to the standard 4. All in all a slick operation with quality birds and hospitality to match. Tom Adams - GunsOnPegs
