Brook Park Shoot is a family run business located in South Hertfordshire. Our season starts in September with some exciting partridge days before we proceed on to the mixed bird days consisting of partridges, pheasants, ducks and the occasional guinea fowl.
The minimum bird days offered are 200 but we can show you up to 400 birds as a double gun day if desired. The size of the day will determine how many drives are provided and weather conditions will influence the location of each drive. We are privileged enough to have a choice of drives to mix and match so even if the weather turns, we should still be able to show you a great day.
Following breakfast and a briefing from the Shoot Manager, guns are transported around the estate on the Brook Park Shoot Gun Bus. Mid-morning refreshments are served between drives in the beautiful countryside. The Shoot Captain and the Gamekeeper review the shooting throughout and adjust the drives as necessary to be able to offer the guns the best day possible. A delicious meal is served back in the shoot reception room where the guns conclude their day..
Hospitality
A breakfast of bacon butties, fruit & freshly brewed coffee/tea is served upon your arrival. We then have some exciting ‘elevenses’ out in the field. Lunch is a fork buffet & consists of either a meat or fish dish which is accompanied with some hearty salads, French bread & a Cheese Board. Example mains are:
Cold Roast Topside of Beef with Bernaise sauce, or Marmalade glazed Roast Gammon and Piccalilli, or Sherry & Tarragon Baked Salmon Side.
New for the 2020/21 season is a converted defender that serves as our catering vehicle. It ensures we can look after our guns well, serving delicious food from it in-between drives while socially distancing.
Do try to save a little room though because at the end of the day we conclude with tea & some mouth-watering home-made cakes.
Topography
The shoot is run over 1,500 acres of undulating South Herts countryside including 150 acres of woods which offers each gun challenging birds. One of the drives enables us to stand guns on a walkway through the middle of our lake which provides a unique but enjoyable experience.
Conservation Efforts
Our game cover consists of maize which provides good cover for the birds but we also mix our covers with conservation friendly crops such as wild bird mix which contains things such as mustard, fodder radish, white, red & reed millet, phacelia, quinoa & buckwheat which offers food & cover for a much wider range of farmland wildlife thereby enhancing the habitat.
Naturally we follow the GWCT’s Guidelines for Sustainable Gamebird Releasing & carry out some woodland habitat improvement in & around the pens which helps a whole range of woodland wildlife, from warblers to butterflies.
Once the shooting season has ended we continue to feed the remaining released birds which also helps seed eating songbirds during the “hungry gap” of late winter & spring.
About the hosts
David is the Shoot Captain & has over 50 years of shooting experience. David & his wife began Brook Park Shoot over 25 years ago so it is very well established. Our Gamekeeper; Dan has been here at Brook Park since 2019 so it's safe to say he has the lay of the land sorted. Dan and the team work hard to ensure the birds are well cared for & that there are plenty to show you. We have a fabulous beating team and wonderful pickers up who work well together in a very friendly environment. An essential ingredient to any shoot! Brilliant days sport! well organised from the beginning to the end of the day, out of this world food and hospitality, fantastic group of individual to spent the day with, great show of birds allowing all to pick their shots wisely easily making the expected bag, this was mine and my 5 guns first experience of Brook Park but will certainly not be our last, this was in our opinion a larger scale shoot with the friendliness of a family and friends shoot, thank you again for your hospitality and company, we all look forward to seeing you soon.
