Set on the edge of the beautiful South Downs National Park, Southwick Estate offers outstanding traditional shooting in truly picturesque surroundings.

The estate provides traditional partridge shooting across the rolling downs, where sweeping views and natural contours create both sporting challenge and memorable scenery. In contrast, its mature woodland rides deliver well-presented pheasants, rising cleanly above the treetops for testing yet elegant sport.

Hospitality

Our brand-new Shoot Lodge serves as the central meeting point for the day. Guests are warmly welcomed with morning tea or freshly brewed coffee, accompanied by warm breakfast rolls — the perfect start before heading out onto the downs.

Elevenses are served in the field from our state-of-the-art Gun Bus. Fresh game goujons, venison sliders, and sausage rolls are prepared before you, allowing guests to enjoy delicious, locally sourced fare alongside a tipple of their choosing.

Lunch is once again hosted in the beautiful Shoot Lodge, where guests are seated and served a carefully prepared two-course meal of their choice. A selection of wines, beers, and soft drinks accompanies the meal, rounding off the day’s sport with relaxed elegance and generous hospitality.

Topography

Rolling Hills & Mature Woodland.

Set within an estate known for both its rural heritage and its historic wartime significance under Dwight D. Eisenhower, the shoot carries a sense of continuity with the past. It is as much about stewardship of the land and longstanding custom as it is about the sport itself — a traditional English shoot shaped by landscape, history, and quiet ceremony.

Conservation Efforts

At Southwick Estate, significant work has been undertaken to support and reintroduce the English partridge — more properly known as the Grey Partridge — a native farmland bird whose numbers have declined dramatically across the UK over recent decades.

The programme begins with careful habitat restoration. Margins and conservation headlands have been established around arable fields, providing vital nesting cover and insect-rich brood habitat. Wild bird seed mixes and cover crops are planted to supply winter feed and shelter, while sympathetic hedgerow management creates safe corridors across the estate.

About the hosts

At Southwick Estate, each shoot day is personally overseen and hosted by Harry, whose 15 years of experience in gamekeeping and shoot management ensure a day delivered with professionalism, attention to detail, and genuine warmth.

Harry’s experience is evident from the moment guests arrive. The day runs seamlessly under his guidance — from the morning welcome in the Shoot Lodge to the final drive of the afternoon. His knowledge of the estate, its drives, and the behaviour of its birds allows him to present sport that is both testing and enjoyable, carefully tailored to the abilities and expectations of each team.

Final thoughts

Southwick Estate is a historic country estate set in the rolling countryside of Hampshire. At its heart stands Southwick House, an elegant Georgian mansion. The estate is famed for its military history: during World War II, it served as Allied headquarters for planning the D-Day landings, with General Dwight D. Eisenhower using it as his command center. Beyond its wartime significance, Southwick has long been a centre for traditional English country pursuits, including shooting, riding, and estate farming, blending heritage, sport, and rural charm.
