A hidden family shoot in the heart of the Cotswolds. We will shoot more partridges than pheasants early on in the year and we are flexible on dates if the ones I have specified don't work
Our keeper Andrew Woods has been with us now for about 15 years having worked as head keeper Brimpsfield and is passionate about producing the most challenging birds on the day.
We have 16 different drives to choose from depending on the conditions. There is the legendary drive called Pylons which is my personal favourite where birds come from deceptively far away and keep climbing and with some south west prevailing wind is absolutely jaw dropping. Larkett Hill is equally thrilling where you stand in a deep ride through a valley of mature trees with a small window to operate within. Nine acre, BarleyWood, Cleodie's do not disappoint and guns want to come back for more each time.
We generally work around the 250-300 bird mark but there is the potential to shoot a few more. We will endeavour to familiarise whoever takes the day as much as possible with the shoot so they feel like they have some ownership of the day. We can cater for up to nine guns and welcome extra family members for lunch and to come and watch.
We are located about a 90 minute drive from London and have some fantastic pubs in the area.
We are always developing drives and planting game strips trees and shrubs. Some of our ground covers Lodge Park (an enormous 400 acre walled deer park with magnificent ancient beech trees).
We shoot 18 days through the season just over half of which are let and we have about four days to fill from the middle of October to the end of November (weekdays only).
We will do our very best to solve any problems and make the day a success. It would be a pleasure to take any interested party for a drive around the farm to get the feel of it.
Hospitality
Bacon rolls are an absolute necessity for first thing in the morning with freshly ground coffee. We have a fabulous shootroom with bags of character which is always cosy and warm with carefully selected wines (from our conveniently local master of wines) and excellent ales from the Hook Norton brewery. The food is very fine country fare consisting of an arrangement of pies and stews to suit (a famous fish pie). But please let us know in time of any particular dietary requirements or requests. We really don't mind a challenge to make it right. (children of course are welcome too).
Topography
We shoot on just over 3000 acres of rolling organic farmland a mixture of permanent pasture arable and woodland. There are tremendous broad and deep valleys which suit pheasants and partridges alike and the distance that they travel from one side to the other results in some superb high and challenging shooting. The area here is absolutely stunning and we do take it for granted but it's a nice reminder when a newcomer arrives. There are a couple of drives in the woods but most of the time is spent standing on grass fields (and not sticky ploughed fields). There is plenty of space to stand and even with 9 guns you will not feel crowded. All the drives spread well and are of a similar size so everyone gets in the shooting.
Conservation Efforts
We are an organic farm and have several initiatives running concurrently that benefit the environment, but the traditional manner in which we farm organically and with the soil and landscape is what makes a huge difference to the habitat and biodiversity.
About the hosts
It is our family farm and I have been involved and run the shoot now for about 20 years. I love meeting new guns and also seeing old friends come back each year. We are more than happy to help someone who is inexperienced or at the opposite end anyone who finds getting about hard too. Nobody will be told off for wearing the wrong thing. Most importantly we care about is that number one everyone is safe and after that, that everyone has fun. We have lovely traditional shoot with classical terrific drives but mixed with a genuinely friendly atmosphere.
