Set within rolling Essex countryside, the Audley End Estate Shoot delivers an exceptional field sporting experience that blends tradition, professionalism, and a deep respect for the countryside. With sweeping valleys, mature woodland, and naturally varied topography, the estate provides a challenging and scenic setting for high-quality driven pheasant and partridge shooting. Every day is meticulously planned and expertly managed to ensure memorable sport alongside the highest standards of safety and wildlife stewardship.

Guests attending the Open Day will have the opportunity to tour the estate and drives, view the exceptional shooting ground first-hand, and meet Head Keeper Geoff Garrod and the experienced shoot team behind the operation. The event is designed to give new and regular guests an insight into both the quality of the shoot and the warm hospitality for which Audley End Estate has become known. To book please enquire via GunsOnPegs and shoot secretary Aimee will be happy to assist.

Book with us to shoot at the historic and beautiful Audley End Estate near Saffron Walden for the 2026/27 season.

The shoot is managed in hand by the family, as it has been for generations. Nestling in the finest rolling Essex countryside, the Shoot is run over the Estate’s principal Audley End beat on some 4000 plus acres of arable farmland; presenting best quality driven pheasant and partridge from both cover and mature woodland, much of it famously laid out in the 18th century by Lancelot “Capability” Brown.

The Estate’s chalk hills rise to almost 360 feet above sea level and present some steepling pheasants. Our high hedges, deliberately encouraged to grow tall, can deliver a pulse racing partridge covey, bursting over the guns to rival the best. A sample of principle drives might include partridge from Green Field and Johns Hill and pheasant from Hatton's Plantation, Brands Hill, Wallis’s Wood and The Oaks. There are many more to choose from and our Gamekeepers will select the right drive for the team and conditions on the day.

On arrival, guests are served coffee and are met by our Shoot Team, including Head Keeper Geoff Garrod and his wife Karen. Substantial elevenses are provided in the field and a splendid lunch, prepared by renowned local chef, Trevor Barwood, is served in the atmospheric Audley End Shoot Room at Home Farm, at the end of the day.  A brace of game ready for the oven is offered to all guns to take home.

Efficiently and professionally conducted under the watchful eye of Head Keeper Geoff Garrod, named the Great British Shooting Awards 2020 Gamekeeper of the Year, we endeavour to present a quality, testing day's sport to suit even the most discerning shot. Guns will head home with fond memories to savour and to recount to friends of a famous day at Audley End.

Transport around the shoot is provided in the bespoke green gun bus. Well behaved gundogs are welcome.

Audley End is 5 miles from Junction 9/9A on the M11/A11 if travelling north and 9 miles from Junction 10 on the M11 if travelling south, and an hour’s drive from central London.

Good rail links to Audley End Station on the London Liverpool Street to Cambridge line and a 20 minute drive from Stansted Airport.

Great local accommodation is available nearby. Please speak to Aimee our Shoot Secretary for recommendations and to discuss your requirements.

Hospitality

All the refreshments on the day are provided for Guns and guests up to 10 people. Additional guests can also be accommodated for the full day or just the meal. Bacon rolls for breakfast can be prebooked as an extra.

We can recommend some excellent local pub accommodation, Air BnB and Hotel options and we are very well connected by the main train line to Liverpool Street, the M11 and Stansted Airport.

Birds

We have more than 30 covers which we will select from to provide the best sport on the day. There are arable fileds and cover crops and also established and newer woodlands. The drives can also be reversed and presented differently to provide an infinite number of options. With the right conditions our undulating chalk hills provide spectacular high, fast birds and there is a variety of different landscapes to provide differing challenges.

Topography

Rolling chalk and clay hills and streams with the main park laid out by Capability Brown around the Mansion (run by English Heritage). Extensive range of drives over the surrounding Estate Woodland and Farmland. Large open fields surrounded by hedgerows with game cover dotted between.

Conservation Efforts

The Shoot is carefully managed to boost wildlife conservation efforts and to maintain the flora and fauna of the British Countryside. Our Gamekeepers collaborate with our Farmers to create a favourable habitat, benefitting not only gamebirds but also other species.

About the hosts

The Newman family own and Manage the Estate supported by The Estate Team, including Estate Director OIiver Hauxwell. Aimee Balaam is the Shoot Secretary who is the first point of contact for enquiries. Geoff Garrod our very experienced Head Keeper and his wife Karen will greet and guide guests on the day. Underkeeper Charlotte Cowling has been a welcome recent addition to the team.

Travel information

We are located just off the M11, on the main Liverpool Street Trainline from London to Cambridge and close to Stansted Airport. We also have our own airfield suitable for light aircraft.

Final thoughts

The Estate Team is very well established and we are able to provide a consistent warm welcome, year on year, to returning teams of guns. We also love to welcome new guests and show off our special place- it is quite like stepping back in time for a day away from your normal life. There are gamekeepers in tweed, log fires, dogs, fresh seasonal food and no wifi in the lodge! Bliss.

Mr. Jay Fletcher

One of this seasons best days shooting so far at AEE. Thoroughly looked after by head keeper Geoff, his wife Karen, Aimee and other members of the team. Coffee on arrival in the shoot lodge with a roaring fire , then off out to the drives . Geoff's professionalism and gamekeeping skill are obvious right from the off . He took time to explain each drive on arrival and where to expect the birds. Geoff has been the keeper at Audley End for 40 years and it shows , he's slick and something of a raconteur as well as he joined us for dinner afterwards. I'd wanted to shoot on this magnificent, historic estate for years and it delivered superbly. Highly recommended this shoot and we are already looking at booking our return this season. Thanks again to the AEE team for a memorable day spent with old and newly made friends.
