The Wyton Shoot, home of Partridges & Cartridges, is a family-run shoot set in the open farmland plains of Holderness, just outside Hull. The ground is made up of wide arable fields, cover crops and pockets of woodland, providing a variety of opportunities for walked-up and a couple of mini drives. Our days are a little different: they run alongside professional gundog training, which makes the experience both traditional and unique. As the line moves through cover crop and grassland, trained retrievers and handlers pick the birds, giving you the chance to enjoy a proper walked-up day while watching skilled dogs at work. Birds

English and French partridges over hedgerows, in cover crop and grassland.

Topography

Wyton Shoot is situated in the plains of Holderness, which is an area of the East Riding of Yorkshire, on the east coast of England. Holderness is flat agricultural land with hedgerows, dykes and woodland spinneys.

Conservation Efforts

At The Wyton Shoot, conservation goes hand-in-hand with shooting. We manage ponds, hedgerows and game cover to support songbirds, pollinators and other wildlife, while responsible predator control benefits ground-nesting birds. With English partridge on the ground, we’re especially focused on creating habitats where traditional species can thrive.

About the hosts

Your hosts for the day are Jim and Samantha, alongside our under keeper Ken — and, growing into the role each season, our young son Bertie. We keep things relaxed and welcoming, with guns and dog handlers very much as one team. Expect a laid-back, family-run atmosphere where the focus is on good sport, good company, and enjoying the day together.

Final thoughts

We’ve been running shoots and training days here for around 20 years, though the roots go back much further. Jim started in gamekeeping straight from school at 15, working across a number of estates around the UK before establishing The Wyton Shoot. That experience, combined with a family-run approach, gives the shoot a traditional yet welcoming feel. Guests enjoy a mix of English and French partridge — something quite rare — along with relaxed days where strong dog-work and good company are at the heart of it. Many guns return year after year, drawn by both the quality of the sport, value and the friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere.
