Buster Ansell runs superb shoots. As a former keeper he knows the ground and the birds intimately, and always ensures good shooting across the gun line. Particularly when the wind is blowing across the South Downs, the birds are fast and challenging, and there are always plenty of them. Hospitality, both in the field, and at the shoot lodge, is top quality - just like the shoot.

My second visit to Hoddern/Piddinghoe and every bit as good as the first one, we were lucky with the weather and after a bit of a downpour on the first drive, the day brightened up nicely -the wind along the valleys made for some extremely exciting and memorable shooting, and in numbers that kept you on your toes and busy throughout the drives wherever you were in the line. Although it is still early season, the partridge were fit and flew very well all day. Hospitality was excellent, and there was a choice of sloegasms or soft drinks to accompany the excellent sausage rolls, cheese straws, quail scotch eggs - the list goes on! Buster runs a genuinely superb day and is supported by teams of beaters and pickers up who work tirelessly to make the most of your day.

I cannot recommend this shoot highly enough, fantastic topography of the South Downs makes for some truly memorable drives. We had a steady flow of challenging partridges over the valleys at Hoddern. Buster and Neil managed the day to perfection. Wonderful hospitality and a cracking lunch. We will definitely be back!

The Hoddern Estate nestles in the South Downs, the scenery is the reason that so many artists come to this part of the world; being lucky enough to visit a shoot adds cameos of Thorburn paintings as partridges and pheasants wander the stubble, grass and lanes. Buster has set out to make this a memorable place to shoot. Great teams of people, micro managed drives and plenty of birds to choose from for all abilities. The hospitality is great, the bacon rolls on arrival are delicious, as was lunch; and refreshment and snacks allowed for those driving home and for those who were being driven. Buster drove me around all day and never stops analysing how things are going, but everything ran smoothly. A curated collection of nice touches.
