Birds

Yester Estate spans over 1,000 acres of forestry, agricultural land and rough conservation areas, providing a varied and interesting setting for a truly bespoke sporting day.

Shoot days can be arranged to suit all abilities and individual guest requirements, with a carefully coordinated mix of pheasant and partridge drives designed to provide plenty of sport while making the most of the Estate’s diverse landscape.

A combination of traditional driven and walked-up shooting can be incorporated into the day,

For something a little different, we can also arrange bespoke simulated clay drives, including the opportunity to shoot with the magnificent Yester House as a backdrop.

Topography

Yester Estate sits within the beautiful East Lothian countryside, with a wonderfully varied landscape of rolling agricultural ground, mature woodland, forestry and areas of rough conservation land.

The changing topography across the Estate is a real strength of the shoot, allowing drives to be positioned to take advantage of natural contours, woodland edges, open ground and changes in elevation to present challenging and sporting birds.

No two parts of the Estate feel quite the same. Guns can move from traditional woodland drives into more open farmland and rougher ground, all surrounded by the wider scenery and character of this historic Scottish estate.

Conservation Efforts

Conservation and responsible land management are an important part of the wider Yester Estate.

The Estate includes several hundred acres of woodland and forestry managed through carefully considered long-term management plans, with a focus on maintaining healthy, diverse woodland while improving habitats for wildlife across the Estate.

We also place a strong emphasis on responsible deer management, helping to protect woodland regeneration and maintain a balanced and sustainable deer population.

Alongside this, Yester has an active interest in grey partridge conservation, with habitat management across agricultural and rough conservation ground designed to support this important native species and encourage wider biodiversity.

About the hosts

Hosted by our head game keeper and Estate Manager throughout the day, each shoot is tailored to the individual with the offer of high end, formal shoots to a more casual, rough walk around experience.

Final thoughts

Construction on Yester House began in 1699 and continued well into the 18th century in a series of building phases. It is now protected as a category A listed building and the grounds of which are also included in the ‘Inventory of Garden and Designed Landscapes in Scotland’, the national listing of significant gardens. It was the home of the Hay family, later Marquesses of Tweeddale, from the 15th century,

In 2014 the current owners, Garreth and Nicola Wood, along with their two young children purchased Yester House. For four years they have carefully restored Yester House and its surrounding gardens, giving it a welcoming breath of fresh air. This is a home that they hope to enjoy with family and friends for many years to come.
