East Burton Estate is a family run sporting estate run by husband and wife team Tom and Charlie and their two little helpers Mollie and Arthur. The estate is set in the stunning county of Dorset with the River Frome running through its heart. With water meadows and well managed woodland it is perfect for a day’s pheasant and duck shooting as well as resident woodcock and snipe. Friendly shoot with the central hub being our family home where everyone is welcome. We rear all the birds on site from incubation through to release with Tom, Charlie and our two children doing the seasonal keepering duties. Deer stalking and duck flighting opportunities are also available.

Hospitality

We welcome all our guests into our home during the course of the day. Guns and guests are given a three course meal (main, dessert and cheese) at the end of the day in our dinning room. All food is prepared and cooked in our kitchen by Charlie. We use fresh locally sourced ingredients and our own game and some vegetables from the garden, with the pheasant goujons being a big hit at elevensies. Guns are given two options to choose from for the mains and desserts prior to the day. Alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks are provided throughout the day and nothing beats a slogasm whilst admiring the river view from the patio.

Topography

Lowland water meadows but don't let this deceive you. The ground may be flat but the birds are fast and cunning. All the duck are fed and flushed from the river and are not the conventional circling birds that they are sometimes branded as. It is fair to say there are birds for everyone here and even the experienced shot can be out classed.

About the hosts

Tom and Charlie Rushton are in their seventh season at East Burton Estate. Our home, Cliff Cottage overlooks the water meadows and is the perfect setting to welcome our teams of guns and beaters , who are made up of family and friends. Charlie hosts the days with Tom running the beating team. Tom has over 14 years of keepering experience both abroad and in England and had 9 years working on a commercial shoot. We count ourselves very lucky to have an amazing team of beaters and picker ups who are incredibly professional in their jobs whilst maintaining good humour on some of our wetter days, (waders are an essential bit of kit). We pride ourselves knowing our guests leave after having a day that consists of much fun and laughter, good food in a friendly family orientated atmosphere.

I can recommend the shooting here thoroughly. It’s unpretentious and all about a good day’s sport. The duck flew brilliantly and we had some excellent pheasants too. It is also a very pretty area of land to shoot on. The picking up/beating team are extremely friendly and chatty and Tom was a fantastic host. The entire team had a phenomenal day.

Had two days at East Burton, the first in October 23, on my own filling a last minute slot on a 100 day and the second a 60 bird day on 24 January 2024, the last commercially let day I believe of the season. In October there were plenty of birds, mainly duck, and each of the four drives was carefully managed to give all guns a fair distribution of the birds. In January Tom and Charlie mixed and matched 6 drives to ensure we exceeded the target bag - not easy at the very end of the season. Every had a really great time, Tom and Charlie and their team are great and this shoot is outstanding value. If you are looking for an affordable days shooting you won’t be able to do any better.

Shot here at the start of October (dry) and January (wet). Plenty of birds well presented, beaters do an excellent job. A limited amount of walking is required with 4x4 transport available if needed, all drives a short distance from the house. Be aware the river floods heavily in the wet weather - this naturally limits access to the drives and how they can be beaten, make sure your wellies don't leak, bring waders if you have them. Overall a great day out, wet socks or not!

We arrived not knowing what to expect as 1st time we had shot here having found the day on Guns On Pegs. From the very outset Tom was very approachable. For those that don’t have 4x4’s this is a great shoot as all drives are walking distance from Tom. & Charlie’s home with your guns & cartridge bags delivered on the back of a Kubato !! We received a great little card at the team talk with all our names, pegs and name of drives detailed - we had 4 for he day. The 1st 2 drives were in the same place with you moving peg and facing opposite directions and boy did Tom and his team deliver some great birds, that are driven off the river in the distance so by time they reach you are a good height and moving at a nice speed - warning do not get carried away and pick your bird. The expectations were set and the following 3 drives did not disappoint. The elevenses and lunch were amazing and all cooked by Charlie (toms wife) I will be contacting for the recipe for the marinated duck bites and dipping sauce. Thank you to Tom, Charlie and their team for a great day, all guns are looking forward to our next day there in December were we hope to see a few pheasant too.
