We would be delighted to welcome you to the Combe Estate which is set in the heart of the East Devon countryside.  The very word Combe means a steep sided wooded valley and that is typical of the landscape of this 4000 acre private estate owned by Richard Marker.

Combe is a true Westcountry Shooting Estate with a fantastic variety of drives offering challenging birds for even the most accomplished of game shots.

What it is not is a fully commercial big bag shoot.  The majority of the sold days are for bags of between 200 and 250 birds however there are a limited number of 250 bird plus days available which hitherto have been reserved for the owner and a few selected teams.

The majority of the drives are out of semi ancient natural woodland supplemented by some game cover.  The guns may find themselves stood on purpose built boardwalks, within the woods or out on open pasture but always positioned to be underneath the best birds the drives have to offer.

The head keeper and his team strive to spread the shooting across the line in order that no gun is ever out of the shooting.

All days include a home cooked lunch in the purpose built shoot lodge in the heart of the estate with a full package of in field refreshments and drinks.

Over the years the shoot at Combe has welcomed some prestigious guests and been the subject of an article which featured in The Field entitled “Full Markers for Quality”.

To quote the article “Any true sportsman will recognize the standard of the birds, the sportsmanship of the guns and, a rarer facet, the bonhomie of the host.  It is this that carries the day.”

Combe can accommodate teams of up to nine guns, partners and friends are welcome as are well behaved gundogs.  We ask that you use biodegradable wads and you are welcome to bring your own vehicle or we can drive you in our fleet of four by fours.

Richard Marker, his family and team aim to make your day at Combe a memorable and extremely enjoyable experience.  We would welcome any enquiry.

"Combe Estate is always the first and most important date in my shooting diary.

The reason for this is that I believe the Shoot Day covers every aspect that makes
the Sport we love a truly memorable and unforgettable experience.

There's no hardship in getting there as it’s only 20 minutes from the M5.

On arrival you are immediately hit by the most wonderful and scenic land the South
West has to offer.

Every step of the Day is organised in a manner which is warm and welcoming but
behind the scenes the Professionalism and Attention to Detail is 100%.

Away from the Drives the facilities where the odd "Livener" can be taken are Top Quality,
however when on your Peg "Combe Estate" really explodes into life by providing
Birds that all shooting abilities can Marvel in!

**_You will never leave there without a "Bath-Time" Bird (one that sticks in the memory)
and you'll be reaching for next years diary as soon as you pull out of the drive!
I guarantee you'll be hit for SIX! "

Hospitality

Our large days are fully catered with hot bull shot (Richard's own unique recipe), snacks and refreshments between drives as well as a professionally cooked lunch with fine wines. The day is concluded with tea and cake and further refreshments if required at the end of the day. Ingredients for our lunches will primarily come from the estate and the kitchen garden. Beef from our own herd of pedigree red Devon Cattle, venison, game, lamb and pork are all utilised to produce a fine meal accompanied by the best wines from the host's private cellar. We take our lunches in the well appointed shoot lodge. We also have a second shoot lodge in the heart of the estate with wood burner and warm Aga which is useful to retreat to when the weather is against us between drives.

Birds

A good mix of sporting birds from woodland and cover crops. The signatures drives show as a good a bird as you would like to shoot at.

Topography

Steep Sided wooded valleys and rolling pasture land in the Devon countryside. Mainly situated at the heart of the 4000 acre Combe Estate, with over 20 drives to choose from.

About the hosts

The majority of the days will be hosted by the estate manager Justin Lascelles. Our aim is to ensure that you have the best experience possible and we are always happy to cater the day to suit the needs of a particular team.

Final thoughts

Combe Estate hosted the International Gundog League Retriever Championship in 2024. This was the first time that the championship had been held on a driven shoot format for over 20 years. It was a great success with the competitors, judges and spectators all complimenting the standard of birds shown.

The Journey to Combe each season is filled with anticipation and happy memories. Combe is the epitome of pheasant shooting. Quality sport in beautiful surroundings, superbly run in the most friendly and relaxed atmosphere. If I could only shoot Pheasants once a season it would have to be at Combe.
