Clovelly Shoot

What a day from start to finish. Charles, Jim and his team provided the most awesome day’s sport. All drives challenging, not for the faint hearted As a single gun travelling to a new shoot not knowing any of the other guns can be a little unnerving, but no Charles and 4 regulars made you feel extremely comfortable making you feel at ease and explaining what to expect. Some years on from my first visit this place has become somewhat of a pilgrimage now 2 to 3 times a year. My days have ranged from the 350 days to the 200 days and whilst the volume alters according to your day taken, the consistency of quality does not. One of mine and so many others favourite shoots.[more]

As our country increasingly falls apart there is one thing that remains constant. The UK has the best shooting in the world. Which brings me to the Clovelly (pronounced in a slightly Welsh way)shoot. There are many great shoots but my favourite is Clovelly which I shot for the third time . Firstly they present the fastest,highest most difficult birds you will ever experience anywhere. But because there are so many there are also plenty of mid range shots for those who wish it. The hospitality, presided over by the organiser ,the wonderful Charles is second to none. But there is something more. Clovelly is a village and small harbour nestling below cliffs ascending to a plateau high overhead. It is wild and dramatic . That’s why it’s used in film sets. Think novels about smuggling in the 18 century. Jamaica Inn stuff. They launch the birds from the heights and you shoot over these spectacular vistas with the sea as a backdrop below. It is staggering ;both beautiful and unique. Try this shoot you will not be disappointed.[more]

Charles and Jim have added a super elevenses and lunch hut to the day with the food provided by Frisky Pheasant and although the fine tuning is still ongoing its a welcome addition to what must be one of the best woodland shoots in the country. We had a mixed team of 10 guns, most had shot here before including one gun who I believe was there for 3 days in one week. For the one or two that hadn't experienced Clovelly before it was a bit of an eye opener! I really do love this shoot and to visit here with family and friends is an absolute pleasure. As I have said in a previous review Charles is a brilliant host and will arrange the day to encompass all abilities and types; however if you want to test yourself then you will be tested. The birds come at you from every conceivable angle, you are not able to measure the line and speed over numerous birds because the next one could be sliding on the wind and another 20m higher than the last from the opposite direction. Fabulous! The beating and picking up team are very impressive, every bird is marked and searched for. The dogs are superb and they are incredibly fit, quite simply they have to be to work on the almost vertical valley sides. Wholeheartedly recommended, if you think you have experienced the best then give Clovelly a go, at the very least you will walk away with a silly grin on your face.[more]

As Charles told me before we got there ‘There will be something for everyone’. He was right. As the drives went on the birds got higher and more challenging and it was great to build it up that way!
