Carswell is a 1100 acre Estate consisting of four farms running along 2 miles of the South Devon Coast.

The shoot is run as a sporting club, with most members returning every year at least once with a team of their friends to shoot at Carswell. Bag sizes range from 150 in October/November down to 100 by Christmas. Occasionally 50 bird mini driven days at the end of the season if bird numbers allow!

The interaction between shooting and conservation is something we believe strongly in, and that measures of success in the future will not just be about birds shot, but also improvements in net biodiversity, species numbers and density of population across the board.

Hospitality

All food and drink is included in the price for Guns and guests.

Tea/Coffee, Breakfast pastries on arrival.

11's Usually consists of locally sourced sausages, warm soup, (with optional booze boost!) and a selection of sweet treats.

The Shoot meal is a home cooked, two course, sit down affair. Cooked by our own caterer and served around our long table in the shoot lodge.

And of course a healthy selection of libations available throughout the day.

Topography

The Shoot itself was established 1990. Woodblocks and cover crops were planned out and planted under guidance of The GWCT, to enhance the already classic Devonshire rolling countryside.

Additional plantings were added in 2000 and 2017 to compliment the existing blocks of ancient woodland.

As well as the conventional inland drives, where birds are shown from wooded valleys and cover crops, Carswell also has some spectacular coastal partridge shooting, which form the signature drives on the Estate.

Conservation Efforts

At Carswell we want to be at the forefront of the changes. We are certain that the reversal of biodiversity loss is a key pillar of success, and this means managing the landscape and habitat with this in mind. The shoot provides revenue to achieve this, with a dedicated Keeper focussing on improvements every year to conservation while achieving a first class shoot in one of the most beautiful locations in the UK.

About the hosts

Carswell Farm is owned and run as an organic dairy farm by the Sayers Family. Geoff Sayers often hosts days alongside our dedicated shoot host Simon. Both know the shoot intimately and are able to ensure guns are placed out in just the right spot, to capitalise on the conditions on the day.
