UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT 2024/25 SEASON
I know that seems to be the case with the Bodidris Shoot most years, but we feel very luck to have been given the chance to take on this amazing piece of the Welsh Landscape to run alongside our longstanding pheasant shoot , the Gwerglas beat on the Rhug Estate.
We've historically run days averaging around the 100 bird mark with a strong family feel and are looking to bring a similar feel to the days that we will be hosting at Bodidris.
Naturally by expanding our ground, it has left room to introduce some new faces to our supportive, friendly syndicate, but we know that the best way to meet those potential new faces is to sell some team days and individual pegs which is what brings me to writing this on Guns on Pegs today.
If relaxed days with no pressure, no judgement and a good group of people sound like your thing then give me a call or drop me a message, I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Thomas Dowell (son of the technophobe shoot captain, Gwyn)
Hospitality
North Wales is a hotspot for tourism, with plenty of hotels to suit every taste and budget from 5 star country hotels to log cabin air BnB's. We have a variety of local places that can accommodate an entire shoot party and would be happy to help organise that for anyone interested. We also have a shoot on the Rhug estate and can therefore accommodate two days of shooting back to back and organise accommodation accordingly.
We also have many small towns and villages which are great to make a shoot day into a long weekend in, such as Ruthin and Llangollen. Chester is also right on the doorstep with great train links and plenty of opportunity to extend your stay here.
Topography
We're very new to the ground, but feel very spoilt by what is on offer in Llandegla as far as topography. We have spoken to people who have shot there, old keepers who have worked the estate and have re-jigged a few things to hopefully work better for both the tenants, guns and the beating team alike. The ground is stunning with a vast mixture of woodland, replant, moorland as well as the more typical game cover and pristine farmland. We are very lucky to be working alongside the estates farms and are really looking forward to kick off some of the well renowned drives on the estate such as the ski slope and the pylon drives as well as a few other new ones.
Conservation Efforts
Conservation has to be at the forefront of any game shoots minds and efforts and that is most definitely the case here. We have been inspired by 'the return of the grey partridge' and were very keen to support our native species.
for this we have turned a lot of attention towards the moorlands on the estate. They have presented their won set of challenges but we're looking at creating a management program alongside NRW to help to continue to stimulate the already high number of red listed species that call the Llandegla Moor SSSI their home.
This year we have seen large numbers of black grouse and observed 3 pairs of Curlew on the moor and hoping to see those numbers continue to rise alongside all the other wild native species.
About the hosts
My names Tom, I've been charged with the task of advertising on here. I'm the son of the shoot captain, Gwyn Dowell and I've been dragged out on shoot days for as long as I can remember, beating, picking up, shooting, repairing pens, feeding, watering, and everything in-between, and I think I can safely say the same about dad. There's plenty of stories of him skipping school to be picked up by the game keeper for a days beating, though he chose woodwork instead of a career in gamekeeping, so has always had a shoot ticking over (for as long as I can remember) to satisfy his true calling.
We run the shoot as a family unit along with my mum and brother, with plenty of help from good friends.

This was run as if they had been there years (although they are new management) the days were seamless food excellent great sport and above all very relaxed and fun (without compromising safety) overall I was very impressed I have been back three times and hope to visit many more , keep up the good work to all the teams, beaters, pickers up, gamekeeper, shoot captains. I look forward to another season soon.

This was my first driven shoot and I couldn’t have asked for a better day. I was nervous about the etiquette, choice of clothes and mixing with an established syndicate than the shooting itself, but didn’t need to worry, this shoot is super friendly and welcoming. We met at the Llandegla community cafe at 0900 where everyone sat and had breakfast together. The syndicate members made those of us from outside welcome and the rules of the day and peg draw was done. As a first timer, Tom offered to stand behind me and guide me through the day which was very beneficial. He was calm and knowledgeable and put me at ease very quickly on what to do. Listening to his radio gave me a a great insight to what was going on to make the shoot possible with the beaters and pick up team. I was impressed with the level of coordination coming from the shoot captain. Drive 1 saw a lot of birds flushed, gaining nice height, and proving challenging in the wind. I quickly settled my nerves, and after a few missed shots, I hit my first pheasant, followed by three more. I couldn’t have asked for a better start to my first shoot. Drive 2 again saw a lot of birds flushed, and plenty of opportunities to shoot at them. The birds were very nicely presented the way they flew over. I took two more on this drive. Drive 3 was in a woodland setting and the birds again were plenty. The window of opportunity to hit these birds was fast and the experienced shots did well. I didn’t hit any on this drive but had the opportunity with at least 10 birds coming my way. Drive four was another good drive, with lots of birds flushed. Depending where you were stood in the wind dictated how many came your way, but I feel on a normal day everyone would have had a good amount come towards them. I got plenty of shots off and hit two more. We finished the day being invited to go to the pub with the syndicate members which was a perfect ending. A great day, and if I had the chance I would join the syndicate.

An absolutely fantastic day out. Plenty of birds seen and some fantastic shooting. We we arrived at the Cafe in the morning which allowed all the guns to mingle and then after that we went onto the first drive which was beat incredibly well. Birds came out in lovely flushes and some really challenging high birds followed on which provided some excellent shooting and this was the theme of the day. The team look after you well on the day and create a brilliant atmosphere. The phesant and tomato pies at the elevenses are to die for. We saw more than enough birds to fill the bag but with a mixed ability of shooting and a couple of first time shooters on peg we were slightly off bag but nobody had a bad word to say in the pub afterwards. With this being their first year running Bodidris I can't wait to see what they will do next year. I will definitely be booking a day here again.
