Topography
Covering some 2.900 acres of arable and grassland land and some 350 acres of woodland in the heart of the Eden Valley the shoot borders the Rivers Eden and Eamont on two sides and includes rolling countryside with some steeper slopes allowing for a variety of drives for all capabilities of gun, a number with extensive views of the Pennines to the east and the Lakeland mountains to the west.
Conservation Efforts
The shoot works alongside the wider estate including tenant farmers and foresters to promote conservation across the whole estate. Extensive game crops and the woodlands are managed to enhance wildlife in the locality with numerous areas of new woodland planting taking place over the years. Feeding on after the end of the season has helped enhance the population and number of bird species present which is evidenced though regular species surveys. Habitat surveys help inform management of the agricultural areas sympathetically to the environment. Deer management, mink and predator control is undertaken in hand and the estate is working towards a CSS - Higher Tier scheme for all the woodland areas, which will encompass squirrel management to enhance the population of red squirrels.
About the hosts
New teams will on their first visit initially be met by the estates land agent but thereafter the management and hosting of the day is lead by the Estate Keeper, John Allinson, and Estate Foreman, Richard Dunn.
The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming and days are laid back with frequent interaction between guns and the estate team of beaters and pickers up which all makes for an enjoyable social experience as well as shooting experience.

Final thoughts
We believe that the shoot at Winderwath provides an excellent shooting day in one of the most beautiful parts of the Eden Valley, Cumbria sandwiched between the Pennines and the Lake District. Days maintain all the traditions of a formal shoot day, but with a relaxed and convivial atmosphere that provides both a great shoot experience but also a pleasant hospitable day out.
Based originally around a family shoot established by the late David Pollock after he bought the estate in the late 1940's from the Duke of Westminster the shoot has developed over the intervening years to become the locally well known shoot it now is.
