A traditional, relaxed, family-run shoot set in the stunning North Cumbrian countryside, with walking between drives.

Hospitality

Elevenses, lunch, and afternoon tea are all included, with everything homemade. Guests can enjoy our own selection of infused gins, pheasant/venison sausages, and freshly baked treats for elevenses, followed by a hearty lunch and drinks at Moorhouse Hall. The day ends with warm crumpets and a spread of homemade cakes and biscuits.

Birds

The day will feature predominantly pheasant shooting, with a wide variety of drives, from game crops to high birds driven off banked woodland. The estate also holds several coveys of wild English partridge, wild mallard, teal and snipe, offering an added challenge and variety to the day.

Topography

The estate lies in the Eden Valley, framed by the Pennines to the east, the Lake District to the south and the hills of southern Scotland to the north. Although surrounded by mountainous country, the shoot itself is largely flat, with a mixture of game crops, banks and pockets of woodland that create excellent opportunities for sporting birds.

Conservation Efforts

The Moorhouse Estate places conservation at the heart of everything we do. Our English partridge conservation project is award-winning, and we are committed to maintaining natural habitats through careful management of our woodland and hedgerows.

We protect vulnerable species, with dedicated schemes in place for red squirrels, as well as the preservation of breeding habitats for ground nesting birds including curlews and lapwings. We're planting new woodland and working under stewardship schemes to ensure our land is managed sustainably for generations to come.

We are also proud that all game shot on the estate enters the food chain. With on-site processing facilities, we make pheasant/venison sausages which are sold locally, ensuring nothing goes to waste and supporting the community.

About the hosts

At Moorhouse Hall, guests are welcomed into a true family-run shoot. Several members of the family are on hand throughout the day to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere while ensuring everything runs seamlessly. Owner Jocelyn hosts elevenses, lunch and tea, making sure no one goes underfed, while her son-in-law, Mike, takes on the role of shoot captain. Working closely with our keeper, Mick, he keeps the day running smoothly, adapts drives to suit the conditions, and guides guns around the estate.

Travel information

Moorhouse Hall is a fifteen minute drive from Carlisle station which has trains running directly to London and Glasgow. The shoot is an hour's drive from Newcastle airport or two hours from Manchester.

Final thoughts

The estate was purchased by the late James Carr in the 1980s with the ambition of restoring it to its past life as a sporting estate. James dedicated much of his life to this vision and took great pride in the successful shoot he created. His passion for the land has been passed on to his family, who, following his death, continue to run the shoot today with the same commitment and care. We would be delighted to welcome you to Moorhouse Hall and share our corner of Cumbria with you.
