Pheasant

Castlesteads is a hidden gem of a shoot covering Hadrian’s Wall country north-east of Carlisle with views of the North Pennines and Lakes. Having been let for 30 years the family have recently taken the shoot back in hand. It is within easy reach of both the M6 and A69.

Hospitality

Tea and coffee with an optional bacon roll are provided on arrival. Contact the shoot to discuss options for elevenses and lunch.

Birds

Our drives are varied and provide testing birds for the experienced shot, but with plenty of scope for more novice members.

Days from 100 – 150 birds and teams of up to 10 guns are available.

Non-shooting guests are welcome and while we have an excellent team of pickers-up, they will always respect the guns who wish to work their own dogs at the end of a drive.

Topography

The shoot covers 1476 acres including 232 acres of woodland. With two rivers, the Irthing and Cambeck running through the estate, the topography includes a mixture of gulleys and open fields between mature woods and game crops.

Travel information

If driving it is within easy reach of the A69, come off at Brampton, 20mins from Junction 43 on the M6.
Carlisle station is a 20min taxi ride.

Accommodation is available in local inns and hotels.

This was our first experience here and we were made very welcome. The day was very well organised with four drives all tightly controlled by the full time gamekeeper and his experienced beating time. The drives were significantly different including one with the guns distributed along a steeply gorged beck. Even though the season was well advanced, there were plenty of birds, well shown. This is lovely country and the day was relaxed and highly enjoyable. Given the chance we will be back.

The day was perfectly organized while still retaining a family feel, with varied and exciting shooting, all located in the most beautiful countryside, where you are often in sight of water. Overall the most wonderful day.

Castlesteads is a lovely shoot in beautiful surroundings. There is a good variety or drives to suit all abilities. The “home team” including keeper, beaters, pickers up etc. are all very welcoming and professional clearly know their roles. The hospitality is top notch including coffee on arrival, elevenses, delicious lunch and tea. I thoroughly look forward to returning at some point.
