The Bleatarn Shoot is nestled in the Eden Valley between the market towns of Appleby and Kirkby Stephen. The shoot extends over 1,000 acres and is set in rolling countryside bordered by the River Eden and a backdrop of the North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and Howgill Fells. It's easily accessible from the A66 Trunk Road or M6 motorway, and there are a number of accommodation options available to those travelling from further afield.

The shoot has been run as a syndicated shoot for over 60 years. The emphasis of the shoot is based around 3 valleys, and the there are a range of about 25 drives from duck on the river, to more challenging pheasants and partridge shown from woodland and natural cover.

The shoot habitat is fortunate to be home to roe deer, red squirrels and plenty of wild game.

The shoot offers driven days of around 125-150 head for teams of 8 - 10 experienced guns.

The Bleatarn Shoot is run with a family and personal feel, and stands out for the variety of drives, quarry and scenery it has to offer matched by drives that suit all capabilities.

Hospitality

We have upgraded our shooting lodge which is where you will meet in the morning for coffee and a warming tipple before setting off. After a few drives, we provide warm sausages and cakes washed down with a selection of drinks. At the end of the day your team returns to the shoot lodge for a meal based around locally sourced game prepared by a local chef.

Topography

The shoot is nestled in the Upper Eden Valley with its rolling hills, and valleys. The shoot is based over 1,000 acres from the River Eden and through 3 valleys punctuated by a mixture of 150 acres of woodland and cover.

Conservation Efforts

In the winter of 2020/21 we have planted over 4km of new hedging, putting in 75 new standard hedgerow trees and created new wildlife corridors between most of the woods. We have removed over 1,500 tonnes of timber to improve the habitat within existing woodlands and have planted an additional 11 hectares of new woodland in the past 5 years. We have successfully reared grey partridge under a broody hen for the past 2 seasons, with the aim of re-establishing a native brood in the next 5 years. Our key aims at the moment are to improve the habitat for native woodcock which are a regular site on shoot days, and to manage our rough ground for wading birds including snipe.

About the hosts

The shoot has been run by the same family for 60 years, with many of the beaters being 'almost' family. The owner, who lives on site, will host your day.

P. S.

Bleatarn is a well organised friendly shoot with some challenging drives which produced some lovely birds despite the weather on the day. This was our syndicate's annual trip away so we stayed 2 nights in the local Kings Head pub as recommended who we also very accommodating. We would certainly recommend this shoot. Thanks to Ed and the Team.

A real gem of a shoot in breath taking country, with fantastic hospitality and sport shown. A variety of drives consistently showed good numbers of birds for the whole line, with lots of Woodcock to keep things interesting. Whilst this particular team couldn't quite do them the justice they deserved, Ed and his team ensured that there was great sport for all abilities. Cracking family run shoot that delivers on every level.
