The Trawsgoed Estate, near Aberystwyth, Mid Wales offers a few days, part walked up, part driven, shooting each season. The upland estate covers over 5,000-acres, although most of the shooting is done over some 1,500-acres of lower ground on or adjoining parts of Tregaron Bog (Cors Caron).
We specialise in walked up rough shooting days where the variety of game is more important than the numbers. Guns need to be reasonably fit and active enough to walk most of the day over rough ground, marshes and wetlands. The skill and experience of the guns will determine the bag shot which can include: pheasant, snipe, mallard, teal, widgeon and hares.
After a morning walking, lunch is served at a farm on the estate, either in an outhouse (with an open fire) or in the open field, depending on the weather conditions. In the afternoon there is more walked up shooting or a duck flight can be arranged.
This is authentic, old-fashioned shooting, in beautiful wild countryside, and has been described as the perfect antidote to too much driven pheasant shooting where guns are moved from stand to stand in 4 x 4s.
Accomodation can be arranged.

I have shot with John and his team at Trawsgoed for a number of years and always look forward to our annual (or more frequent) pilgrimages to the bog. The shooting is wild, exciting, challenging, varied, unpredictable, and hard work (I could go on). The bag will not be large and you will not get to fire boxes of cartridges. This is quality and variety over quantity. The excitement is in the odd woodcock shot on the snap shot, the few snipe shot as they jink across the bog, or the duck shot as it swoops over at 50 feet. If you want to fire lots of shots, bags lots of pheasants, and stand on a peg whilst teams of beaters put the birds over you, I suggest you find another shoot. If you want hard-won sport which you will remember, come to Trawsgoed. In short, it is shooting as it should be.

This is challenging walked up rough shooting in a wild and beautiful place where the varied quarry is hard won and immensely satisfying. Patience, fitness and instinct are all prerequisites. There is also a bit of informal driven pheasant to present some birds for the less expert shot such as myself.

This is true essence of hunting with the gun. Rough unexpected shooting at its best in a wild and remote part of the UK. Everything, to be frank, that are contrary to some of the questions above re expected bag, elevenses (!) volume, etc are found here. It is NOT suitable for anyone finding it hard to cross barbed wire fences unaided, identify a teal at head height 60 yards off, wanting to fire lots of shots, squeamish about going over the top of wellies, and unable to read rough terrain in hunting over varied ground. The host knows his hinterland well and runs it like a family day. The essence of the day is to enjoy gathering, steaming wet at the end, in a smoked filled bothy having fired a handful of shots (bismuth essential) over an duck-wing whispering ancient bog, had a chance at a snappy woodcock and to chew over a wild hunt with mates with hopefully a bird for the pot to take home to the family.

As a team we have enjoyed John Vaughan's fantastic company and knowledge for five years now. John's effortless style and intimate understanding of Tregaron bog make for a unique and unrivalled experience. Do not come if you are in to numbers. If a serious calorific burn and hard one quarry is your thing Trawsgoed has it all. This is rough shooting in its purist form.
